Vetted by K’Anne Meinel is a romantic age gap story about accepting who you really are, taking joy in what you are passionate about and learning to embrace love during difficult circumstances.

Allyssa is a college student who yearns to be free from the demands of her upper class family. She wants to live her life on her own terms but her parents are always dictating her life by choosing who she should be friends with, the perfect man she should marry and the business classes she should take in order for her to be an asset to the family business. Allyssa does not know how to get their attention or how to make them understand that the life they want for her isn’t the life she wants for herself.

Fiona is a mature woman and she is a veterinarian at a small animal practice. She really wants to start her own large animal practice one day and she is tirelessly working towards her goal. An injured dog brings Allyssa and Fiona together and from that moment onwards their lives will never be the same again.

Can love overcome any obstacle in its path? Will Allyssa and Fiona’s love for each other survive under the strain of disapproval, disappointing setbacks and devious rustlers?

The Characters

Allyssa is a college student who is taking business courses to please her family. My heart really goes out to Allyssa because she has a strained relationship with her family and she feels smothered by their control and their blatant disregard for her desires. I just love Allyssa’s tenacity— once she makes up her mind to do something, she will do whatever it takes to get the task done and she will do it to the best of her ability. She will always have a permanent place in my heart because she adores animals, she is independent, kind-hearted, fun-loving and considerate.

Fiona is a veterinarian and she has plans to start her own large animal veterinary practice one day. I really adore the loving way Fiona handles the animals and I have so much respect for her because she treats her clients fairly. She is a really good listener and she encourages Allyssa to follow her dreams. Fiona’s industrious, affectionate and trustworthy nature endeared her to me.

The Writing Style

I was swept away by the beautiful descriptions of the rugged countryside. I also enjoyed the witty banter between the characters and I got caught up in the captivating dilemmas Allyssa and Fiona had to deal with.

The Pros

I really enjoyed reading about what veterinarians go through when they are treating small and large animals. I love animals and I have a soft spot for women who take care of animals on a daily basis.

The Cons

Some of the scenarios were a bit rushed and they should have been expanded so that I could have had more background on some of the characters and the predicaments they had to contend with.

aprils favourite booksThe Conclusion

This story really captured my heart with the realistic situations and triumphant moments. I really admire the way the author creates such beautiful and touching stories that contain difficult and sometimes heartbreaking circumstances. I really enjoyed watching Allyssa grow into the woman she was meant to be and I just love the way Fiona encouraged and supported her every step of the way. If you love a romantic story with dynamic women, breathtaking scenery, quirky animals and a shifty rustler or two, then this is definitely the story for you!

The woman nodded thoughtfully as she took the form Allyssa had filled out. “Allyssa,” she practically whispered the name aloud. Frowning, she wished she could remember how she knew the woman.

“Thank you, Doctor Robinson,” she said, reading the name on the lapel and then looking at the name of the clinic on everything.

“Oh, I’m not Doctor Robinson,” the other woman objected. “What made you think…” she started to ask and then looked down at the doctor’s coat she had pulled on. She laughed at herself, showing even, white teeth. She shook her head and corrected the other woman. “I’m just one of his hirelings. I’m Doctor Herriot, not to be confused with the one in England who writes books,” she laughed again. “I’m Fiona, Fey to my friends,” she held out her hand to be shaken.

Allyssa held out her own hand, noticing that the doctor’s was firm and soft. She smiled at the reference to Doctor Herriot… she’d read all his books. “You don’t sound like you are from Yorkshire in the least,” she teased charmingly to show she caught the reference.

Fiona laughed with her. Those books had set her on the path to becoming a veterinarian at a very young age.

“I should be going,” Allyssa continued, glancing at the clock on the wall. It was a retro clock with the eyes of a cat going back and forth along with its tail; the body had the actual time. She knew no one knew where she was, but her mother would be alarmed if she had been expected home. She’d have to get back to the dorms just in case her mother had checked on her for any reason.

“Yes, it is late. I’ll make sure I call you and give you an update,” the doctor promised.
