veritas-by-mj-duncanVeritas by MJ Duncan takes you on a romance filled cruise of the British and American Virgin Islands. Lauren Murphy is a New York chef looking to get some down time during a working holiday as a personal chef on a chartered yacht. She meets the gorgeous but distant captain Grey Wells who seems angry at her presence on the boat.

Generally romance novels have me rolling my eyes at the over dramatic story lines. This book has none of that, it is completely entertaining and ensnaring all on its own.

The Characters

I’m generally not a fan of romances because the characters are usually painted as caricatures of people. MJ Duncan manages to masterfully avoid this and create characters who seem true and react emotionally in very realistic ways.

While Grey at first seems like the classic brooding hero, you learn that her emotions come from a deeply tragic place and that she is simply doing her best to cope with the circumstances before her. On the other hand Lauren needs to make a really difficult choice which rings true for someone of her age.

The side characters, especially the guests on the cruises were really delightful and quite well developed.

The Writing Style

The writing style is fantastic, for me this means that it is clean of grammar and spelling mistakes, it has a good pace and most importantly, effortlessly creates a believable world.

The Pros

A fun, light romance perfect for lovers of a happy ending without too much drama.

The Cons

I really, really, really want to go on a private cruise in the Virgin Islands. Oh and waffles, I really want some of those too.

The Conclusion

This is a great read for lovers of romance and escapism. The book is enjoyable and easy to read.

Book Quote

The kiss was slow, deep, and hungry, a desperate combination of lips and teeth and tongue that left no question as to where things between them were headed.

Note from Sheena: This book was part of a challenge to authors. I challenged them to help me make Tamara (my wife) love lesbian literature as much as I do.
