valley of fire by missouri vaunValley of Fire by Missouri Vaun is part of the Return To Earth series. This time Ava is the main character. We met her originally in Vaun’s first novel All Things Rise. She is a pilot and was pivotal in bringing Cole and Audrey together. But she was left rather loveless in the process, leaving me a little sad for her.

Vaun has redeemed herself in this novel because not only is Ava the main character but she has a fun story and love interest. But I am getting ahead of myself, let me start by telling you the premise for this novel.

Ava has a one night stand with Leland, a handsome stranger who she meets at a club. Ava leaves early in the morning before Leland wakes because she knows that she is about to move to another cloud city and doesn’t want to get entangled in a relationship. Little does she know Leland and her will soon be kidnapped and trapped on earth by an extremist group.

This novel is an action rollercoaster with a large dose of science fiction and romance thrown in for fun.

The Characters

I love Ava but would have enjoyed Vaun to explore her a little more. I didn’t feel like I got to know something about her that I didn’t already know.

It was fun meeting Leland and learning about her scientific quest and history.

There were a lot of characters and I sometimes struggled to remember who they were. I am not entirely sure the secondary love story was needed.

The Writing Style

Vaun has a crisp writing style that plays well in an action novel. Usually she writes love scenes that raise the temperature a couple of degrees. I found that missing from this novel.

The Pros

I enjoyed the book. It is a fun action romp.

The ending had a lovely touch allowing you to revisit some of the characters from pervious novels.

I also really love the cover.

The Cons

I felt like the romance was a little flat. It didn’t hugely affect my enjoyment of the story, but don’t expect a romance novel.

The Conclusion

This book is worth a read, especially if you have been following the series. This can be read as a stand alone but you will get so much more enjoyment if you have read the others and know the characters.

I do love the way Vaun writes. Some of her lines are pure magic – like this one – “And in a rare instance of absolute ecstasy, Ava did something she never allowed herself to do. She relinquished control.”

Excerpt from Valley of Fire by Missouri Vaun

Through the hum of activity, Leland became suddenly aware of one person in particular. A woman in a flight suit strode confidently toward her. As she drew closer, Leland was taken by her fair complexion, classic square jawline, and dark hair pulled back into a knot at her nape. Even wearing the flight suit, her feminine, yet firm, athletic build was obvious. The tight fitting suit hugged every slight curve, and Leland found it difficult not to stare. The woman was speaking into her comm device and only briefly glanced in Leland’s direction as she passed by.

Leland couldn’t resist turning to watch the woman’s retreating figure. She tried to make the backwards glance quick, but a murmured remark from one of the security escorts told her she’d been caught looking.
