Twice Upon A Time by Erica LeeTwice Upon A Time by Erica Lee is a second chance romance that comes with a heavy dose of angst in a sweet, drama-filled, story.

Kari Adelberg is the happiest she has been in years. She has her friends, her family, and a dog that just adores her. True, her romantic life isn’t great, but that’s to be expected when she already had the great love of her life. Too bad that great love didn’t give her the courtesy of hanging around, or at least saying goodbye face to face with dignity. But Kari isn’t bitter. No, she’s totally happy, and totally over her ex. That’s what she keeps telling herself until that great love ends up right next door.

Kacey Caldwell knows she screwed up with Kari. They had plans for the future until she ripped those plans apart with no explanation. Now she and her young daughter, Bailey, own the house next door to Kari’s. While Kari sees it as a reminder of all the pain she endured, Kacey sees it as a second chance to be with the one girl she hasn’t been able to forget.

Kari is understandably wary of being around Kacey, and she curses her treacherous heart every time  the two are within feet of each other. She has so many questions that only Kacey can answer. But is Kari ready to hear Kacey out? Or will the fear of pain and heartbreak keep her from risking it all for that once-in-a-lifetime love?

The Characters

These two women are the embodiment of knowing you’ve had that one great love and then had to let them go.

Kari has what some would consider a good life. She’s bright, funny, and has a good heart. She wants to find love just like everyone else. But, she knows she must get over the ultimate love, and that’s not easy to do when there are so many unanswered questions as to why their relationship ended. Luckily for her, fate is about to give her those answers, and possibly a second chance with her one true love.

Kacey’s physical appearance makes her seem like a badass, with her striking tattoos and tank tops, but she’s truly a softy at heart. That soft heart lead her to being chivalrous to a young co-ed and help her home when she was drunk. And then she lost her heart. The only thing larger than her gallant nature is her sense of loyalty to her family. It’s this loyalty that causes her to make one of the hardest decisions to leave, not only school but the perfect girl. In the ten years since that choice, Kacey has done her best to keep living. Now she has a chance to make things right, and she’ll do anything to to this woman she’s not going anywhere for a long time.

The Writing Style

This is one of the more interesting stories I’ve read where there is a lot of angst but not so much drama. Don’t get me wrong, there is drama, but this story is all about the angst. Angst, to me, comes from the emotional aspect of the characters. Kacey and Kari have strong emotions and feelings for the other. While Kari’s stem from the hurt and rejection, Kacey’s stem from the regret and guilt of the decision she made to leave. The submersion into all of this emotion from both characters will have your heart aching and hoping for these two women to see once and for all that they belong together.

The Pros

Bailey is the coolest little girl in the whole world. I would love to get to know and hang out with her in real life.

The Cons

The angst is plentiful in this story, which is great if that’s what you want. If you’re looking for something a little bit lighter, might want to try this one later.

The Conclusion

This story was so fun to read and really tugged at my heart strings. These are the kinds of stories that have you weeping with the characters, awing at their little moments, and frustrate you when they take forever to see what’s right in front of them. Basically, it’s the perfect second chance romance and you’ll have a lot of emotions reading it.

Excerpt from Twice Upon A Time by Erica Lee

“Kari, it’s nice to see you. It’s been awhile.”

Nice to see you? Ten years ago, [Kacey] dropped out of school with no explanation, then barely talked to me before dumping me over a text message and now all she had to say was that it was nice to see me? I could have screamed. All the years I spent thinking about what it would be like to see her again, I never imagined it would be like this. “Nice to see you too, Kacey.”

Clearly catching on to my sarcasm, Kacey lifted one eyebrow, so subtle that it’d be missed by most people, but I noticed. Of course I noticed, and I hated that I did. I hated the effect that one slight movement was having on me, causing a feeling that started in my gut and spread throughout my whole body.

“You know my mom?” Bailey asked, tilting her head.

I blew out a breath as I thought about how to answer. “I do,” I answered simply.

When I looked from Bailey to Kacey, her eyes were studying me in a way that only Kacey’s could, and I felt like I might melt. I hated it and loved it, which only made me hate it even more. I refused to let her have this effect on me. Not after all these years. I forced my eyes away from hers before I spoke again. “Well, I did. But that was a long time ago. I don’t know her anymore.” I glanced down at my phone as though I had somewhere to be. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to get going. It was great to meet you, Bailey.”

Without saying another word, I turned on my heels and headed towards the house. After closing the door, I pressed my back against it and took big heaving breaths, trying to gain any semblance of control. Kacey was gone. Out of my life. I was never going to see her again. It took me years to accept that. Now that she was back, what was I supposed to do? How was I supposed to feel?

I couldn’t think about anything right now. I just needed to go back to being and escape from reality for a bit. But I knew the truth. I could never escape Kacey Caldwell. Not even in my dreams.
