The Taste of Winter by Geneva Vand is a super sweet romance with a cute supernatural twist.

Playing in a snowy park one night gets Lizzie the shapeshifting unicorn into a tight spot. And then she is spotted by Hailey who can’t believe her eyes, but she really wants to.

Hailey would love to believe what she sees but magic is for kids and she’s in college to be an accountant. She wishes she could meet the pretty, soft unicorn again but instead she runs into a cute woman in the coffee shop. The woman is staring at her, which is great but she doesn’t quite understand why.

Lizzie thought she’d never again see the woman who rescued her and said she was pretty, but there she is standing in line. Before long the two are seeing each other a lot. How can she give away her biggest secret and not lose Hailey’s affection?

Pros And My Favourite Parts

The first thing I noticed is how cute the book cover is and inside the cute cover is the cutest meet cute ever. It’s a cute book.

From the start and all the way through I was very taken with the sweet young women who will have the best story to tell their children. Hailey falls quickly for the very pretty unicorn who brings magic to her almost-an-accountant existence. Extrovert Hailey is super understanding with Lizzie, the self-professed queen of socially awkward introverts. They may be young but they are both comfortable with themselves.

The book is really short but tells a simple story about two young people who fit together in all the important ways. Hailey does grouse at Lizzie a few times, which she earns and which does not slow their romantic journey. It also tickles Lizzie’s aunt Merry, the ultimate protector and prognosticator. I always like to read a book in which the family is portrayed as caring and supportive.

Cons And Heads Up

I can’t think of any negative.

The Conclusion

This is a cute romance from beginning to end. Lizzie and Hailey like each other from the start, and they fit together really well. I enjoyed Lizzie’s aunt Merry, who is protective but not smothering, and quickly decides the two are meant for each other.

There is not a stitch of angst, and I would have loved to read a lot more of their story. After the cutest meet ever, I enjoyed basking in their sweet, young love.

Excerpt from The Taste of Winter by Geneva Vand

My feet stuttered to a stop on the sidewalk and I stared with wide eyes into the snow-covered park.

What.

The.

Actual.

Fuck.

I squeezed my eyes shut for a second and then blinked them open again.

Nope, it was still there.

I tugged my stretchy gray glove down to bare the back of my wrist and pinched a bit of skin between my teeth for a second. I dropped my hand and waited to wake up for what seemed like an appropriate amount of time – though really, how would I know?

But I waited, and when I decided to be done waiting, it was still there.

Okay.

There was probably a unicorn in the park. There was a unicorn in the park, and it was playing in the snow like a puppy. Or like a foal, I guess.

Or I was hallucinating. It was ten o’clock on Thursday of finals week, and I had drunk enough coffee today to sustain a national guard platoon, so that was totally possible.

But a tiny little part of me – the part of me that was still a little girl who wanted to believe in magic that I was trying desperately to hold onto – really wanted to believe that unicorns were real and there was one right in front of me.

But that was impossible, right? I was definitely hallucinating after spending too much time staring at my laptop screen while drinking to many caramel mochas.

Then the unicorn started playing in the deeper snow that had drifted into the dips under the swing set – so cute – and got its horn stuck in one of the chains.
