The Magistrate by Keira Michelle TelfordThe Magistrate by Keira Michelle Telford is a great book.

I loved the first two books of the Prisonworld Trilogy and am eagerly awaiting the third.

The Magistrate is the first book from the trilogy.

This book follows the story of Carmen Wild. It is the twenty-fourth century in London, England. Crime rates are high, capital punishment and public hangings are common practice. Technology is both advanced and completely reverted to pre technology days. Carmen Wild is a magistrate. Her job is to enforce warrants on criminals.

The laws are strict and unbending. If you cannot afford to look after yourself then you are sent to a workhouse, if you are gay you get a public hanging, if you have killed someone then you are shot where you stand.

While on duty Carmen discovers a murdered prostitute and is led back to her first love, the Madam of an East End cathouse.

The Characters

There are two main characters, Carmen and Lina and a range of interesting and well written support characters. Very little is as it seems and the characters will have you laughing loudly or feeling sad for them. They are well written and feel real.

The Writing Style

The writing style is fantastic. Telford has a wonderful ability to tell vivid stories that make you want to keep reading. Each scene is a gem and no words are excess or lacking.

The Pros

This is a great book and one of my favourites.

The Cons

The third book in the trilogy isn’t out yet. Telford needs to get on with it now and finish it already.

Great read. Highly recommended. I loved every second of it.

Excerpt from The Magistrate by Keira Michelle Telford

Painted royal red, these slender metal cylinders have scanners that are able to read the radio frequency identification tags in Authenticards from up to ten feet away, and they do so automatically with every Authenticard that comes into range.

Carefully dodging them, so that Eleri’s Authenticard doesn’t alert the CPS network to her breach of curfew, then sneak quietly home without incident until, a mere fifteen feet from safety and the comfort of their flat, two constables suddenly turn onto Temple Avenue.

Carmen feels a sudden flash of panic and pulls Eleri into the nearest alleyway. Of course, being slightly drunk, Eleri find the thrill of evading the police absolutely hilarious. She begins to giggle, forcing Carmen to push her up against a wall and cover her mouth.

“Shhhhh!”

Her heart pounding, Carmen keeps Eleri’s mouth smothered and peeks around the corner. It feels like forever, but eventually, the coast clears. Eager to get Eleri off the public streets, Carmen grabs her arm and pulls her down Temple Avenue, making a mad dash for it.

By the time they get to their front door, they’re both enjoying the thrill of law-breaking. Eleri’s giggles are infectious, and the pair tumble into their flat in fits of laughter, slamming the door shut behind them.

They’re home.

They’re safe.

Smiling cheekily, Elri backs herself up against the wall beside Carmen’s bedroom door, biting on her lower lip.

Waiting.

Hoping.

And Carmen won’t disappoint her. After watching Eleri dance all night, her desire is pent up like compressed spring, ready to burst.
