The Intersection Of Law And Desire by JM RedmannThe Intersection Of Law And Desire by JM Redmann is the third book in the Micky Knight Mystery Series. This book can be read as a stand-alone however it would benefit the reader to read the first two books in this series in order to fully understand and appreciate this story.

Change is an inevitable part of life and no one knows this more than Micky Knight as the axis of her world has completely shifted as a result of her unpredictable relationship with Cordelia James. Added to that, Micky accepts a case in order to help out a friend and she has no idea that taking on this case will lead her down the path of an emotional memory lane, one that she has no desire to revisit.

Micky gets caught up in a world of corruption, greed and depravity as she navigates the opulent world of an exclusive New Orleans night club and the squalid bar in the vicinity of the Desire Projects. Micky knows that she’s missing something crucial for her to solve the case but she just can’t put her finger on it. It’s a race against time and a mind boggling enigma that Micky needs to solve.

The case exacts a heavy toll on Micky as she gives her all towards trying to solve it, even as it brings up startling questions for her. Can she get to the bottom of the bizarre events that plague this case? Will it tear asunder the fragile bond that she shares with Cordelia?

The Characters

Micky Knight never ceases to amaze me with her cutting edge ideas to solve a crime. She multi-tasks well as she pushes her personal life and troubles to the back-burner until a case is solved. She manages to hold herself together while she deals with a case that brings up many emotional triggers.

My heart really went out to Cordelia because she went through a lot of emotional hurdles with Micky while she tried to solve the case and deal with her personal demons. Cordelia has a big heart and I love the way she embraces both positive and negative aspects of Micky’s personality.

The Writing Style

The writing was sensational and the author captured the emotions of all of the characters perfectly. The storyline held my interest with the intriguing plot and the sensitive issues the writer addressed within the story.

The Pros

This story highlights the tenacity of the human spirit. Micky does not allow her past issues to render her impotent at solving the case. Even though she has a long way to go, Micky steadily forges ahead to become a better person not only for Cordelia but for herself as well.

The Cons

Sexual exploitation, human trafficking and child abuse are mentioned frequently within the story.

The Conclusion

This story is one that will remain with you for a long while because of the evocative issues that are addressed. Micky’s vulnerable yet determined spirit will endear her to you and your curiosity will get the better of you. If you love fast paced, real life, cutting edge mysteries, then this is the series for you. I can assure you that you will want to read on to find out how Micky’s life will unfold in the other books within the series.

Excerpt from The Intersection Of Law And Desire by JM Redmann

My clock watching was interrupted by the phone. “Hello,” I answered, skipping the “M. Knight Detective Agency” routine, since I assumed that it was too late in the day for clients. “Hi… uh… Micky?” replied a hesitant young boy’s voice. “Patrick, how are you?” “I’m fine, thank you,” he answered, his voice relaxing as he was recognized. I hadn’t seen Patrick, a twelve year old boy, in about a month. His mother Barbara and I were friends. While she had been doing physical therapy, I had insisted on being at the top of the list of people to stay with Patrick and Cissy, her kids. She needed physical therapy because she had been shot in the head. I had been with her when it happened. And although Barbara insists that I had saved her life, I still feel guilty that she almost died while I escaped with only cuts and bruises. She finished about five weeks ago. I had seen her a few times recently, but, my babysitting duty over, I hadn’t seen Patrick or Cissy since.

“So what’s up? You miss me so much, you can’t survive without hearing my dulcet tones?” I kidded Patrick. “Well…no. I want to hire you.” His voice was serious. “Hire me?” I was caught off guard both by his request and his earnestness. “Yes. That’s if you’re not too busy or anything.” “I might be able to work you in,” I agreed. Busy was not a major problem. “Maybe we can meet to discuss it?” he asked trying his best to sound adult and businesslike. After maneuvering around Little League and the like, we worked out a time. In the middle of this, my buzzer rang.

I assumed it to be Ms. Clavish’s tardy package, so without interrupting my conversation with Patrick, I buzzed open the downstairs door. The delivery person could huff and puff up three flights of stairs. “You don’t want to tell me what this is about?” I asked Patrick. “Well,” he hesitated for a moment, “it’s sort of about Cissy. But I don’t want to talk over the phone.” Cissy was two and half years younger than he was. For a brother and a sister, they were fairly close. “Okay.” I didn’t push. “Please don’t tell my mom,” was his final request. My door swung open. For a moment I thought it was a rude delivery person, until I realized that it wasn’t a package courier framed in my doorway.
