The Archer by K AtenThe Archer by K. Aten is the second book in the Arrow of Artemis Series.

Sometimes the path your ancestors lay down for you is the path you do not choose to follow. Kyri was born and raised to become a master fletcher but she decides to remain with the Telequire Amazon tribe. She makes herself invaluable to them by using her skills to protect and serve them. Change is inevitable and Kyri soon learns how unpredictable life can be. She loses and gains so many things in the name of love, sisterhood and sorrow. An unforeseen circumstance takes her far away from everyone she holds near and dear to her heart.

Will Kyri ever find the way back to the people she loves and most importantly, will she be able to take the heartbreaking journey towards reclaiming who she really is?

The Characters

Kyri Fletcher is a newly appointed Amazon warrior. Kyri undergoes so many changes within herself as she comes into her own confidence and worthiness as an Amazon and as a woman who desires the one her soul truly loves. I admire Kyri’s selflessness and unblemished spirit because she is always willing to reach out and help another person with little or no thought to her own safety. Kyri will always have a special place in my heart despite her flaws because she possesses so much love and light in her that I cannot help but love her.

Orianna is the fierce and honorable Queen of the Telequire Amazon Tribe. She faces new threats to her nation’s safety and she fearlessly rises to the challenge to meet each and every threat that comes their way. I may have a bad case of hero worship but so be it! I really adore Orianna’s strength, tenacity and quick wit because she always uses her intuition to guide her decisions and lead her tribe (I would follow her anywhere!).

The Writing Style

I really enjoyed the fast and captivating pace of this story because there was never a dull moment or any scenarios containing forced drama. The author did an awesome job of bringing history alive for me and she also brought each character to life by giving me a peek into their hearts and minds.

The Pros

There is no way I could say no to devouring a story with powerful and alluring Amazon women! Just learning about their way of life is a bonus for me.

The Cons

I am patiently awaiting the sequel to this compelling story… (taps foot while checking my calendar)

I must say that I was deeply touched by the way this story made me think about what life was like for women in Kyri’s era. This story also made me pause and just marvel at all of the strength, talent and will power that has always resided within women throughout the ages. I can certainly say that this is one story that will capture not only your attention but your heart as well because these characters and their journey is unforgettable.

Excerpt from The Archer by K. Aten

“Kyri.” Her soft voice prompted me to meet her eyes. “Whoever it is has caught more than just your gaze, hasn’t she?”

Tears pricked my eyes against my will. My brief words with Ori barely skimmed the context of our conversation to come. Sadly, we never got a chance to talk before she was caught in the new threat to our sister nations, so all the feelings that I had been pushing down for moons had to be pushed back down once again. I thought I knew how she felt but there was still so much doubt. After all, I was nothing more than the newest member of the tribe. My fur was still drying on the rack, so to speak. Nearly a master fletcher, casual scout, huntress, and budding seamstress, it seemed like I had no path in front of me. Not to mention the fact that I still walked in the goddess’s footsteps, meaning my sexual experience was as empty as a quiver at the end of hunting day. My insecurities were only natural given the circumstances. And Ori, goddess! Ori was my queen. Queen Orianna of the Telequire Nation. Defeat slumped my shoulders. “It does not matter, Coryn. There are no chances with her and I am fine with things the way they are.”

A candle drop passed between us, and then another. Coryn’s voice was soft when she spoke again. “I’ve never known you to be someone that would lead a false trail. You can lie to me, but I don’t think it’s good to lie to yourself. Who would make you think you didn’t have a chance? You’re Kyri Fletcher, the woman who shot the impossible and the newest star in the Amazon sky. Tell me sister, who could make your arrows miss their mark, or at least make you think they would? We’re friends, you know you can trust me.”

Sadness welled up inside me and I bit my bottom lip to keep from speaking. Trust was a strange bird. I once trusted that my parents would raise me to adulthood. I once trusted that I would follow in my father’s footsteps as a master fletcher. But I learned that when you lose those closest to you, it becomes much more difficult trusting in the hearts of others. “I—” My voice cracked with the weight of my words. “It is someone who is not available.” I sighed, hating to admit the things that hurt the most. “No, that is not right. She is just not available to me.”
