Stubborn-As-A-Bull-DL-KingStubborn as a Bull by DL King is a cute erotic novella about a player who finally comes around to the idea of romance.

Kat is a bartender at the lesbian bar Artemis and never lacks for bed partners. Her best friend, Carla, nags her to settle down and find happiness, but why would she when there’s someone new and intriguing in the bar all the time? If only one of the regular bar patrons, Lil, would stop butting in whenever she’s getting into a groove with a woman…

The Characters

Kat is an unapologetic player. She has fun with her conquests and always makes sure they have fun too. As much as she doesn’t want to be attached romantically, her friendship-bordering-family attachment to Carla and her husband is sweet.

Most of the story is told in the first person from Kat’s perspective, but we do occasionally see Carla and Lil’s. Their characters are drawn out just enough to be interesting and relatable, but not so much that it stops being Kat’s book. Poor Lil is quite sweet and earnest, someone I’d love to be friends with (why aren’t I friends with any restaurateurs?).

The Writing Style

Stubborn as a Bull does something that shouldn’t work at all, but totally does: Kat’s perspective is always written in the first person and Carla and Lil’s is written in the third. I’ve walked away from other books because of this, but D.L. King handles it so well that it makes sense for this story and it just works.

The Pros

It’s a short, sexy read that’s fun and sweet.

The Cons

This wasn’t a con for me, but some people may not like that we see Kat sleep with two women before she gets together with Lil.

The Conclusion

If you’re looking for a sexy novella to kill an hour or two, look no further. Stubborn as a Bull is a great little read.

Excerpt from Stubborn as a Bull by DL King

“That’s one hot little number. She’s almost as cute as you.”

“Why, thank you, ma’am,” I said, looking toward the sound of the voice. Damn! It was Lil. I wonder when she walked in. “Grey Goose and tonic, is it?”

“Close. Grey Goose but without the tonic. On the rocks, please. Not bad.”

I quickly served everyone I’d been neglecting while I flirted with the dancer and then came back to Lil. “Don’t you own a restaurant?”

She flashed an incredulous look before getting her face under control. “Why, yes, I do. I didn’t know you knew about that. I own The Pear and Camembert a couple of blocks over. A little wine bar bistro. We serve soups and sandwiches, cheese and charcuterie plates, that sort of thing.”

“You don’t need to be there, keeping an eye on things?” I knew it sounded bad as soon as I’d said it. “I mean, well, I didn’t mean…”

“No, I know what you mean. But I like to keep an eye on things over here, too,” she said with a wink. “And besides, it’s a wine bar. We don’t serve mixed drinks. Where else would I get my Grey Goose?” She tilted her glass to me and smiled.
