The Spanish Pearl by Catherine FriendThe Spanish Pearl by Catherine Friend was one of those books that I wished my first time could have been in paperback. I know for a fact that I will also be buying a physical copy of this book if only to have and to hold.

Kate’s girlfriend Anna is HUGE on history, especially Spain’s history. During their trip to Spain Kate gets herself sucked back in time, back to 1085.

In 1085 what type of 21st century skills would even remotely help Kate survive? Women are property, an infection can kill, and food is, well, not that bad actually…

Kate finds herself in the middle of one of Spain’s greatest conflicts. The Islamic Moors and Catholic kings are at war with each other.

Dungeons, harems, filthy soldiers who all want a piece of her @$$, Kate has to battle her way to a cave that is rumored to be able to take her back to her time. When she gets there will she be able to leave the soldier who has helped her survive this world and taken her all the way there as well as maybe possibly taken her heart?

The Characters

I really did love all the characters but the way the story is told, I mostly got to know Kate. I found her enjoyable and relatable. I loved that her character was resilient as well as resourceful. Mostly I loved that she was consistent.

The Writing Style

I thought Catherine Friend’s pacing in this book was perfect, especially the romance.

What I truly loved is the way the story was told solely from Kate’s point of view. I really think when done right that style of storytelling enriches the story and adds mystery to the other characters as well as adds unpredictability to the story.

The Pros

The storytelling style is a huge pro for me AND, guess what!… there is a sequel….and…it is so good.

The Cons

I’m not the slickest with names especially if they are ones I am not familiar with like, let us say, Spanish names of people and cities. Just because the names are not familiar to me I just had a bit of trouble memorizing them. It never stopped me for long; this is still absolutely a book I would recommend to all my friends.

brooklyn's favouriteThe Conclusion

I recommend this book to all my fellow adventure loving lesbians. It also doubles as an amazing time travel romance yet that is not its main theme. If you’re a fan of Catherine Friend’s other works I can promise you she delivers on this novel (and its sequel) as well.

Excerpt from The Spanish Pearl by Catherine Friend

I waited while the paint dried. A name as beautiful as she was. And I would never whisper that name in her ear while we made love. She’d finally told someone her name, but she would never hear me speak it.
