Second Nature by JaeSecond Nature by Jae had me wrapped up in its pages like a birthday present on Christmas morning (completely wrapped up).

Jorie Price has moved to Michigan. An escape from her everyday life in hopes that the move will allow her to finally finish the novel she has been working on. Generally Jorie writes paranormal hetero romance but this novel is different in two ways. One, this novel is lesbian fiction and two, this novel is Jorie’s hope to get the dreams and nightmares about shape-shifting creatures out of her head for good. Whether her publisher or Beta reader thinks it’s a good idea for Jorie to write this book doesn’t matter, she will persist anyway because to her it isn’t about the money but the desperate hope that the dreams will go away.

Griffin Westmore and the rest of the Wrasa, or shape-shifters, believe that author J.W. Price’s new novel is a little too close to the truth about their existence. As an elite soldier, or Saru, for the Wrasa Griffin is assigned to investigate the source of Jorie Price’s information and to protect the secret existence of the Wrasa. She must destroy the manuscript before it gets published and the author if necessary.

The Characters

Being bullied her whole life because of her weird dreams and never quite feeling like she fit in Jorie Price finds happiness in a solitary life, preferring the company of her cats. Two words I would use to describe her character are intelligent and sly.

Ironically Griffin Westmore is not very different from Jorie. Being a hybrid in the Wrasa community is frowned upon. On top of that her two sides could not want more opposing things. Half Kasari, half Puwar; her Kasari, or lion side, yearns to belong but her Puwar, or tiger side, demands independence.

The two together make great chemistry and for a great story, I really enjoyed all the characters.

The Writing Style

I don’t even know! (Am I allowed to say that here?) Amazing? Smooth? Brilliant? All of the above! I loved this book. The plot kept an even and stimulating pace.

The Pros

The writing style is the biggest pro for me. The book was not too intricate but detailed and I appreciated its length (just slightly more than average) because I just wanted more.

The Cons

I became a recluse and started ignoring people and my work because all I wanted to do was read.

Jae just did an amazing job with Second Nature. It has great action and tons of adventure with a dash of romance. I encourage readers who are interested in this genre to give this book a try especially if you have not been introduced to Jae, she is a great author.

She reached for the delete button.

No. Deleting the scene felt wrong. She pressed her fingertips against her temples. But how on earth does a 140-pound woman turn into a 280-pound cat? Jorie slid down on the couch until she lay on her back and stared at the ceiling, the laptop balanced on her stomach. Her eyelids felt as if they were lined with sandpaper, but she couldn’t allow herself to rest. Not before she had figured this out.

“I could really use some help from a cat expert,” she said to Agatha, who had curled up at the end of the worn, comfortable couch.

Agatha eyed the laptop as if that would make the hated machine disappear from the favored spot on Jorie’s lap. When Jorie looked at her, the cat turned and licked her bushy tail.

“And you, Emmy?” Jorie’s gaze wandered to the calico ambling toward the kitchen. “No words of advice for your favorite can opener?”

“Meow,” the cat said but didn’t elaborate. She walked on, looking over her shoulder as if to make sure that Jorie would follow her into the kitchen to feed her.

“Very helpful, thanks. And I just fed you half an hour ago, so that ‘I’m starving’ act is wasted on me.” She forced her tired eyes to focus on the screen, but instead of the scene, images from her nightmares flashed through her mind. Shivering, she shook her head to get rid of the images. “I need a break.”
