Rescue Me by Michelle L TeichmanRescue Me by Michelle L Teichman is a romantic suspense that’s so Canadian it’s like a moose drinking a cup of maple syrup. Okay, maybe not, but it delighted our resident Canadian reviewer, Tara, who was thrilled to share the experience with one of her very favourite people, Brooklyn.

Something is rotten in the city of Toronto. A rookie at the 52 Division has been missing 18 months and another was murdered under suspicious circumstances. Everyone thinks Kristen Bailey was recently transferred from Montreal a couple of months prior and none of them knows she’s an undercover agent for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, investigating whether it really was an EMT that murdered the rookie Ricky Oslowe. Being saddled with a lazy, aging training officer makes it difficult to learn anything, and time is running out before the RCMP pulls her out and sends her back to Ottawa, shattering her dreams of the big promotion to Banff that cracking the case promises.

Ashleigh is new to EMS in Toronto and doesn’t fully understand the feud between the cops and EMTs in the city. She’s been out for a couple of years, but hasn’t dated much since returning from volunteering in Africa, preferring to wait for the right woman to come along. If only cops weren’t off limits, because Bailey is pretty hot and they seem to get along well enough when they’re not sniping at each other.

With one last chance from her boss at the RCMP, Kristen decides Ashleigh is her key to cracking this case. All she has to do is seduce her, get her to talk, and then she is out of there. Just like always…right?

The Characters

Brooklyn: Kristen Bailey is a saucy minx.

Ashleigh Paige is very young and very trusting and is portrayed as such consistently throughout the story.

Tara: That sums each of them up really well. I found I connected the most with Kristen and that’s probably because she grows the most over the course of the book. She’s a big time player and doesn’t do relationships at all. As focused as she is on her career, she also has a huge heart for her brother and his wife, and I enjoyed seeing that group of trusted people grow by one.

Ashley is very sweet and kind, and I liked her just fine. I suspect I didn’t connect as much with her because she’s not only 25, she’s a very young 25. That said, she did damn well in the crisis moment and I loved seeing her (and where she and Kristen are at) in the epilogue.

The Writing Style

Tara: So, Rescue Me is a romantic suspense. The romance worked well for me because the chemistry between them was done well, and oh my goodness, was the kissing ever good. A++ kissing will get me every time. Even better than the romance, however, was the suspense side of things. I’m usually pretty good at guessing mysteries and this book kept me on my toes from beginning to end.

Also, in case you couldn’t tell from the intro to this review, I was thrilled with how Canadian this book is. I grew up in Ontario not too far from most of the events of this book, and Michelle Teichman perfectly captures the spirit of the area. That alone puts this book in an extra special place in my heart.

The Pros

Brooklyn: The action and the plot where so intriguing! It kept me going and honestly, I would have never guessed the outcome.

Tara: GO CANADA!!! Oh, wait, I mean, everything about this book worked for me.

The Cons

Brooklyn: There is just a second where you think Ashleigh is going to be raped.

Tara: None for me other than what Brooklyn just said.

The Conclusion

Brooklyn: If you think you can guess this ending, buy the book, read it, and when you finish, tell me if you got it right.

Tara: If you’re looking for a good romantic suspense with a cop and an EMT, look no further. Rescue Me is a great book and well worth checking out.

Excerpt From Rescue Me by Michelle L Teichman

Kristen wasn’t sure if the smell of coffee entered her brain before or after she awoke. She opened her eyes and looked around. Things were hazy, but this was definitely her room. If she was in her bed, who was making the coffee?

She sat up in a panic and was greeted with searing pain in the back of her head.

Her number-one rule was not to bring women home. She didn’t want any of them knowing where she lived. Women were a one-shot deal. They met, they slept together, and she left. There were no maybe-next-times or when-can-I-see-you-agains. Phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and social networking handles were not exchanged. So, who the hell was clanging around in her kitchen?

“Hey, you’re up,” said a warm, honeyed voice.

Kristen looked up, and there, standing in the doorway with a cup of coffee, was the beautiful paramedic, Ashleigh Paige.

Kristen remembered.

Ashleigh had stayed through the night. Most of the times Kristen had seen her, she’d convinced herself she’d been dreaming, but then Ashleigh was still there. She looked over at the glass of water on her bedside table. Every time she awoke during the night, no matter how many times she drained it, a fresh glass waited for her.

Ashleigh was dressed in her medic uniform, her light brown hair pulled back into a ponytail, and Kristen had to admit she didn’t mind the sight of her first thing in the morning.
