Petticoats And Promises by Penelope FridayPetticoats And Promises by Penelope Friday is an old-school Regency romance.

Serena and Clara have been best friends–almost sisters–all their lives and now they plan to share their first London Season. Given that the avowed reason for a Season is to find a husband, realizing that they’re in love with each other complicates matters. The story follows the trials and tribulations one might expect for two relatively naive young women entering into a forbidden love in a context that allows them little power over the course of their lives. But because this is a capital-R Romance, you may rest easy that they’ll find a way to be together in the end.

The Characters

Serena and Clara are intensely sympathetic characters, even when their choices drive them apart. We follow them navigating enemies, allies, and compromises in pursuit of the type of life they want.

The Writing Style

With only a few exceptions, the historic setting rings true. The erotic content builds in intensity and detail over the course of the book in parallel with the characters’ sexual experience. The primary weakness was that–other than the romance itself–there wasn’t much meat to the plot. I always like my historical romances to have something else going on in parallel.

The Pros

Regency romances are one of my favorite historical genres and I’m always looking for new f/f additions to the list.

The Cons

As noted previously, the non-romance plot is rather thin.

The Conclusion

This is a good book either for people who already know they like Regency romance or who are looking around for new settings for f/f historicals.

Excerpt from Petticoats And Promises by Penelope Friday

I fiddled with a strand of my hair, wrapping it round my finger.

“My mama only told me to be sure not to drink too much champagne,” I confessed. “You don’t…you don’t really think that we are expected to marry in our first season, do you?”

“Why not? We don’t want to run the risk of being left on the shelf,” Clara retorted.

“I don’t think I’d mind.” I tugged at my hair nervously, and Clara slapped at my hand.

“You’re too old to still be doing that, Serry.” Then her tone changed. “Can’t you imagine, though, how much nicer it would be to have a house of one’s own? Not to have to listen to ‘Clara, my dear, do this’; ‘Clara, behave with a little more decorum’ all day long?”

I said nothing for a second, trying to put my thought into words.

“But wouldn’t you be swapping one duty for another?” I ventured. The words of the wedding ceremony flitted through my mind. “To love, honour, and obey…”

She shook her head. “Oh no, I’d only marry someone who would give me my own way in everything.” She flashed a smile at me. “Someone like you.”
