Paladins of the Storm Lord by Barbara Ann Wright: Book Review

Paladins of the Storm Lord by Barbara Ann WrightPaladins of the Storm Lord by Barbara Ann Wright was like an orchestra with all of its pieces creating a symphony. I really truly loved it. I love the intricacy and wide variety of character types.

The Atlas is a transport ship carrying colonists for the population of a new planet.

A ship’s malfunction in its jump drives causes it to crash in the orbit of an unknown planet.

The crew members awaken to a scene of death but discover they have extraordinary powers. The most powerful of the members uses her ability to launch the colonists down to the new planet. From up there, they could all be gods.

It has been 250 years since the humans have landed on the planet they call Calamity and have managed to survive, thrive almost.

Creatures from the swamp called boggins, who were previously dumb and docile, have started attacking human settlements.

Lieutenant Cordelia Ross is a paladin in the city of Gale where they believe there is only one god and he is the Storm Lord. She is sent to investigate the matter and upon encountering boggins it becomes apparent these creatures have become smarter and stronger with their minds set on killing. Someone has had a hand in meddling with these creatures and she needs to find out who as the death toll numbers rise.

The Characters

Oh I just loved practically every character!

Cordelia Ross is the lead female. She was a little rough around the edges for my personal taste but honestly it was what made her character unique in the story. I truly adored Shiv, one of the drushka females. She was just adorable and the perfect comedy relief.

A lot of the characters had their own distinct personality which made the book absolutely interesting to read.

The Writing Style

The book was too the point, a lot of action, with great pacing and flow. My favorite was the way the drushka spoke I think Barbara Ann Wright did such a fantastic job with it.

The Pros

The drushkas! I just loved the way they communicated and interacted. I would read a whole book about the drushkas!

The Cons

This isn’t a con more of a labeling or notification of.

First and foremost this is an action/adventure book but there is a bit of romance. This book includes all types of queer and non-queer romances and kisses. Lesbians, Gays, and Heteros; Paladins of the Storm Lord has it all. The leading female character is a lesbian so this is Lesfic. I hope this doesn’t put anyone off. One of the cutest romances in the book is between a man and a woman drushka.

The Conclusion

brooklyn's favouriteOf course my fellow adventure lovers should read Paladins of the Storm Lord! It is hard to come by a good fantasy/action/adventure (kind of sci-fi) book.

Excerpt from Paladins of the Storm Lord by Barbara Ann Wright

“Hunt leader,” Shiv said. “I am ready.”

“I have told you, young one, only Sa Ross and I will go.”

Shiv tossed her head. “And I have chosen not to listen to you.”

Cordelia looked from one to the other as they stared each other down. Shiv’s fingers twitched, and Nettle’s open hand shot out and struck her stomach. Shiv grunted, reaching for her carved knife, but Nettle’s fist arced out and caught her in the jaw.

Shiv fought to rise but slid to the ground. She wiped a golden trickle of blood from her mouth and grinned. “You hit like a tree, hunt leader.”

Nettle chuckled. “If you live long enough, you will make a fine queen.”

Cordelia lifted her eyebrows, frozen between the desire to reach for a weapon and stay the hell out of this. “Um?”

Shiv walked away, and the drushka continued about their day as if one of their hunt leaders and someone who might one day be a queen—and what the fuck was that about—didn’t just have a fistfight.
