Outside the Law by Carsen TaiteOutside the Law by Carsen Taite is the fourth book in the Lone Star Law series. It could be read as a standalone, but I enjoyed the whole series so much that you should read all of the installments!

Once upon a time, Tanner Cohen knew exactly how her life was going to go. She and her girlfriend, Sydney Brasswell, were both crushing it at law school, so eventually they’d get jobs, get married and have a family. But when it became clear that they didn’t have the same career goals, everything fell apart. They walked away and never stayed in touch.

Now Tanner’s with the FBI in Dallas, working as part of a task force. She gets the shock of her life when she shows up for a status meeting and learns 1) there’s a new special prosecutor who’s been brought in from DC by her boss and 2) that special prosecutor is Syd. None of it makes sense to Tanner, since the Syd she knew had been all about getting on the partner track and making stacks of cash.

Neither of them can ignore the pull that remains between Syd and Tanner. But can they embrace a second chance at love? Or will their differences still keep them apart?

The Characters

I’m a huge fan of Tanner and Syd. They’re both driven, successful women, and while they carry some pain from how they ended their relationship the first time around, it doesn’t define who they are. The chemistry is clearly still there between them and I enjoyed seeing them figure out what they want out of life and each other.

Fans of the rest of the series will be happy to know that the other three couples make appearances in Outside the Law too. And Taite delivers a little something extra special at the end of the book that will give you a happy sigh!

The Writing Style

So! It’s the last book of a series and for people who are wondering, yes, all the threads get tied up nicely. Even better, I was totally shocked by a twist at the end.

Like the rest of the series, this is a romantic suspense. I’d say it weighs more on the romance side than the suspense, which suits me just fine.

Throughout the book, we get flashback scenes of Syd and Tanner’s first go-around at love in parallel with their second chance, which worked really well for pushing that part of the narrative along.

The Narration

I’m so sad that I won’t have anymore stories to listen to in this series anymore, because L.W. Salinas’s performances have been so good! She differentiates all the characters well and brings a little something extra that made me happy when I listened to this and the last two books.

The Pros

Everything!

The Cons

The series is over 😞

The Conclusion

Well, Lone Star Law was one hell of a ride and I’m so glad I got to experience it. If you’re a fan of Carsen Taite’s books, stories about badass investigations, or a series that has both an overarching narrative and self-contained stories in each book, then you should definitely check it out. And if you’re into second chance romances, you’ll want to make sure to read Outside the Law.

Excerpt from Outside the Law by Carsen Taite

Special Agent Tanner Cohen blinked several times, but her eyes weren’t the problem. Sydney Braswell, the love of her life—make that former love, former life—had just strolled into the briefing and slipped into a seat at the back of the room.

Ducking her head to keep from staring, Tanner stole a few glances at Syd, drinking in the sight of her long legs, trim figure, and the waves of auburn hair that used to fan out on the pillow next to hers. Damn, she’d aged well. Tanner shook her head to scatter the memories bubbling to the surface. She hadn’t seen Syd in forever, but staring at her now, the years slipped away.

Tanner felt a sharp jab in her side and Assistant US Attorney Bianca Cruz shot her a quizzical expression. She looked from Bianca to the front of the room at AUSA Peyton Davis, who was running the briefing, and back again, slowly realizing everyone was waiting on her, but she didn’t have a clue why. “I’m sorry, can you repeat that?”
