no good reason by cari hunterNo Good Reason by Cari Hunter is so good. I loved this novel. It is well written, has a killer story (pun intended) and kept me enthralled from start to finish.

Cari Hunter has gone right onto my list of awesome authors to watch.

This is the first novel in the Dark Peak series. It introduces Sanne Jensen and Meg Fielding. Sanne (a detective) and Meg (a doctor) have been best friends for a long time. Occasionally they are friends with benefits. They are both terrified of ruining their friendship by becoming a couple and so they keep things as they are.

The story centres around Sanne who goes out running and discovers a woman who is barely alive after a fall off a cliff. Her hands are bound and she is not wearing much clothing. Sanne is part of the team to investigate the kidnapping while Meg tries to keep the woman alive at the hospital.

When the woman wakes up and begins to speak what she says turns Sanne’s world on its head. Sanne realises that time could be running out for her to catch the kidnapper.

The Characters

This novel is dark and brooding and brilliantly written. Sanne is one of those women with zero self confidence but so much heart that you cannot help fall in love with her. She takes everything very seriously and acts tough but is really quite unsure of her own value.

Meg is a quirky character who is known for swearing at irritating patients. She and Sanne have a deep bond and she is protective over her friend, always knowing when she needs something more than she is saying.

The Writing Style

It is beautifully written. Hunter transports you right into the world she creates and keeps you firmly in the grip of the icy weather, craggy rocks and oppressive atmosphere.

The Pros

It’s an excellent book. I loved everything about it.

The Cons

This is not a romance. You won’t find a love story here and the besties do not end up happily ever after. Personally, this was not a con for me, but it needed to be said so you don’t go in with expectations.

I loved it. I highly recommend it and will be reading the rest of the series and all her other novels too.

Excerpt from No Good Reason by Cari Hunter

She hurt. She hurt when she opened her eyes, and she still hurt when she closed them. Her tongue felt thick, too big for her mouth, and sticky against the cloth could across it. She shouldn’t be able to feel the cold grit beneath her bare thighs, the dampness of the air, the raging thirst; she had never been able to feel them before. She had never been able to move before, either, to touch her fingers to the slick stone or to raise her hands and feel what they were tied with: some kind of plastic-coated rope, knotted tightly enough to bite into her skin. The muscles in her arms were leaden and slow to obey, her fingers fumbling as she pulled the both away from her lips. She tore at the rope with her teeth, snarling and weeping with frustration when it refused to slacken. A slither of sound made her free, breath held, heart racing, but nothing followed, no footsteps, no grunt of effort as if something heavy were being lifted. He never seemed to be gone for long, but then how could she gauge the time through the darkness and the drugs?
