Love On The Night Shift by RadclyffeLove On The Night Shift by Radclyffe is a single mom, workplace romance between new-in-town surgeon, Grady, and night shift charge nurse, Blaise.

Being the sixth book in the Rivers Community Romance series means that it can be read as a stand alone but it does have snippets of continued stories from the previous five books so if you enjoy a series then this is a great one to sink your teeth into.

I have reviewed most of the other books in this series so you can pop on down to the links at the bottom of this page and check out the others. But this is a review for Love On The Night Shift so let’s get cracking.

Grady has just arrived in town and her first shift is a night shift where she meets Blaise. There is an immediate attraction but Blaise is prickly. Something about Grady seems to rub her the wrong way. It doesn’t stop Grady from trying though. She persistently pursues Blaise until she relents and actually spends some time with the persistent surgeon. No matter how strong the chemistry, though, Blaise keeps pulling away from Grady.

Blaise has her hands full with her career and her teenage daughter, she doesn’t need the complication of a romance, especially one that threatens to expose a part of her history that she would rather not expose. It’s a past that affects not just her but her daughter and Grady.

Sometimes, though, it doesn’t matter how determined someone is because love is a powerful force.

The Characters

Grady is a rather one dimensional character. She is sweet, good at her job and into Blaise. That’s pretty much it. I found this to be a bit unusual for Radclyffe who generally has two diverse and in depth characters in the lead.

Blaise has slightly more depth. She is a single mom with a teenage daughter. She is best friends with Abby (who has her very own story in the series) and she is the charge nurse for the night shift.

I enjoyed the book but I found it difficult to really feel deeply for the characters because they felt a little bit phoned in.

The Writing Style

I enjoy the way Radclyffe writes. I like the tension she builds between characters, the very cool cases she sprinkles into the stories and the way she has built this idilic little community. I love visiting the world and thoroughly enjoy seeing the continued stories of the characters from the previous books.

The Narration

Paige McKinney does a good job of narrating the book. I love how she differentiates characters and keeps the flow of the book going. She is a good match for the series.

Heads up for audiobook fans. McKinney has narrated about half the books in this series. I do understand from a publisher’s point of view that it’s not always possible to get the same narrator for the entire series, but from a listener’s point of view it’s really weird jumping around from one narrator to another for a series.

My Favourite Parts

I loved seeing Blake and Margie’s story unfold a little more. The teens are so sweet and definitely a favourite for me. (They are side characters throughout the series.)

Radclyffe builds some of that delicious sexual tension that she is famous for in this one which is always fun.

Heads Up

There is a minor side story of one of the teenage girls being threatened by the town bully who is a male but no real harm comes to any of the characters and it isn’t a big part of the story.

The Conclusion

This is a decent addition to the Rivers series. The writing is decent, the narration was good and the overall story was satisfying.

I can absolutely be listened to as a stand alone but it’s so much better if you start at the beginning and work your way through all the books.

Excerpt from Love On The Night Shift by Radclyffe

“Whoa! Sorry,” Grady blurted. The startled eyes staring back eat her were an unusual gray-blue that reminded her of the Pacific in winter. Not cold, the way you might expect, but depthless, as if all the secrets in the world were hiding below the surface.

“Who–“ The blonde with the storm-blue eyes contented to stare at her. “Are you the surgeon?”

“That’s me.” Grady grinned and held out a hand. “I’m Grady McClure.”

When she got no response from the woman wearing navy blue scrub pants and a scrub shirt with tiny iridescent fish all over it, she tapped the plastic name tag pinned to the lab coat she’s been given after he nickel tour of the hospital either hours earlier. “Dr. Grady McClure. Says so right here.”

Still no smile. Grady tilted her head, trying to determine if the fish were all going in one direction or not. “That is one seriously strange scrub shirt.”

“I’m Blaise Richelieu,” the woman said abruptly, as if she’d just now noticed Grady and wasn’t all that happy to see her. “Charge nurse on the night shift. What do you need?”

Grady felt her eyebrows rise. Something about the cold shoulder turned in her direction for no good reason irritated her more than it should have. “Well, that’s a loaded question.”

Richelieu’s lips pressed together. No-nonsense attitude. No sense of humour, either.

“I was referring to your patient, Doctor,” Blaise said in a voice as icy as her now chilly expression.

“Okay.” All business it would be, then, since friendly was definitely off the table. Grady stroke toward the nurses’ station. Blaise kept pace with her. “I need to know how to reach someone in interventional radiology. I need an arteriogram.”

“Tonight?” Blaise asked.

“Yes, tonight.” Grady leaned against the counter. “Is that going to be a problem?”

Blaise swallowed back the retort forming on her lips. Grady McClure, all tousled black hair and unholy blue eyes and angular planes in a face too damn handsome for word, came on strong and was probably used to getting what she wanted on the bases of sexy good looks alone. Not very generous of her, Bliase admitted, but she wasn’t used to being so off-balance. And that was not acceptable. She has a patient to think about. “No, of course not. Well, it might be a bit of a problem if Mary Ann Okonsky’s on call. Because she does not like getting out of bed in the middle of the night.”

“Who does?” McClure said with a devil’s smile.

Blaise gritted her teeth. Was everything that came out of her mouth innuendo? She probably got a lot of mileage out of her sexy, teasing grin. That wasn’t. Sexy or charming. Most definitely not. Not as far as Blaise was concerned.
