Love At Coopers Creek by Missouri VaunLove at Cooper’s Creek by Missouri Vaun is a lovely small town romance.

Near the top of the corporate ladder and easily able to land any woman for a night of fun, Shaw Daily seemingly has it all. Six months after her mother’s death, however, she’s had enough and takes a leave of absence to return to her grandparents’ former home in Cooper’s Creek, North Carolina. While Shaw doesn’t know what she’s looking for, she’s sure that’s where she’ll find it.

Kate Elkins loves her job teaching first graders. Unfortunately, she needs to put her career and life on hold so she can care for her mother as her dementia worsens. The last thing Kate expects is for her older sister’s friend Shaw to come back to town, bringing all the old feelings from Kate’s adolescent crush with her.

Neither woman is in a place in her life where a relationship makes any sense, since Kate can’t leave Cooper’s Creek and Shaw has a life back in California. Somehow they can’t seem to stop finding excuses to see each other, and then there’s that chemistry that flares every time they’re together…

The Characters

I so enjoyed my time with Kate and Shaw. They’re both sweet and thoughtful, and I was rooting for them all the way. Shaw had a more significant arc than Kate, and I think that was just right because it kept things interesting without allowing the story to become overwrought.

The Writing Style

Love at Cooper’s Creek has such an easy style to it that I was able to sink right in and stay there until I was done. After picking up and putting down several books in a row, I was happy to find myself drawn in by Vaun’s writing style and the perfectly paced romance.

The Narration

It’s no secret that Brittni Pope is one of my favourite narrators going, so I was delighted to experience this book all over again, listening to her bring Kate and Shaw to life. She gave Love at Cooper’s Creek an extra warmth, with just a touch of a drawl for Kate that ensured we remember she’s from North Carolina. I’d happily listen to this one again in the future.

The Pros

Everything worked for me! I loved the characters, Shaw’s journey, and Kate’s family. I also appreciated that the romance is engaging, perfectly paced, and with just the right amount of heat.

The Cons

I didn’t have any!

Love at Cooper’s Creek is a gentle, warm hug of a book. It was exactly what I needed during a hectic week at work and at home, and I’m so glad I found it! I highly recommend it to romance readers and I’ll definitely be reading this one again.

Excerpt from Love at Cooper’s Creek by Missouri Vaun

“Momma is asleep.” Kate took the chair nearest Shaw. Shaw’s hand was on the table and Kate covered it with hers. Shaw rotated her hand and their fingers entwined as if it was the most normal thing. As if it was something they did every day. The simple gesture caused Kate’s heart to flutter like a hummingbird. “Hey, why don’t I make you some breakfast?”

Shaw didn’t answer right away. She wasn’t looking at Kate; she was staring off, as if lost in thought, and then shook her head. “You made dinner last night. You don’t have to keep feeding me.”

“Are you seriously saying that to a Southern woman?”

Shaw laughed, which made the air in the room vibrate with lightness. It was good to see Shaw smile.

“Sorry, what was I thinking?”

“I’m sure I have no idea. But telling a Southern woman not to feed you is basically a cultural insult.” Kate moved to the stove and pulled out a cast iron skillet. “You’re gonna sit there and I’m gonna make you some breakfast. I have my Southern heritage to uphold.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“That’s more like it.”
