Judge Me When I’m Wrong by Cheryl A Head is the fourth book in the Charlie Mack Motown Mystery Series.
The elders have always said that trouble usually comes in pairs and Charlie is learning about this old adage the hard way. Charlie Mack and her team have two court cases to deal with and both cases are literally giving them a run for every cent they’ve ever earned.
Charlie and her wonderful team came up with a foolproof plan that would help their client with his grand jury testimony but everything goes sideways when he changes his mind and his testimony because he’s filled with guilt. His snap decision causes the Mack Investigation team to throw out weeks of careful plotting and preparation. Charlie and her team have to find a way to keep him safe from the people he once trusted and they also want to ensure that he remains on good terms with his father.
While all of this is going on, Charlie is serving her country as a juror and she unintentionally uncovers a jury tampering plot. A notorious crime boss stands to benefit from this interference because it will keep him out of jail and he won’t allow a mere private detective to thwart his well-made plans. Charlie thought that no one knew she was snooping around but that was just wishful thinking on her part because her unauthorized investigation puts her soulmate and everything she cherishes in danger.
Will Charlie be successful with juggling her professional obligations to both cases and her personal responsibilities to her lover without dropping either one of them?
The Characters
Charlene “Charlie” Mack is still working alongside her partners, Don and Gil at the Mack Investigations agency. Mandy Porter is a police officer and she works at the Grosse Pointe Police Division. I’ve got a lot of love and respect for these amazing women because they have fought to keep their relationship intact despite the fact that Mandy was furious with Charlie because of the reckless choices she made while she was on jury duty. Even though I have a soft spot for Charlie, I was annoyed by her actions as well because she knew that she was making unorthodox decisions that had far-reaching consequences yet she still went ahead with them anyway. I’ve got to hand it to Cheryl A. Head, she certainly knows how to craft relatable and endearing characters who always make me smile and shake my head at their entertaining wisecracks and their quirky behavior.
The Writing Style
Cheryl A. Head doesn’t hold back at all when it comes to giving me a lot of realistic details about Charlie and Mandy’s personal and professional lives. This talented author also allowed me to peek into the hearts and minds of her secondary characters and that was a huge plus for me. I don’t think there’s anything better than enjoying this fast-paced mystery with some of my favorite comfort foods because it has enough courtroom drama to satisfy my book dragon until I can get my hands on the next installment in this awesome series!
The Pros
I know this may sound weird but I really enjoyed sinking my teeth into this riveting mystery because it has a couple of underhanded people lurking around every corner and in the courthouse of all places. Added to that, I am rather chuffed that I got to tag along with a noble and flawed person like Charlie because she will do whatever it takes to make sure that justice is served and the truth will always be revealed no matter how many obstacles get in her way.

You won’t get any complaints from me!
The Conclusion
I don’t think you’ll want to stop reading once you get past the first page in this compelling mystery. For me, it has the right amount of action, relationship drama, tender moments and kindle gripping, “what’s-going-to-happen-next” type of scenarios that will keep you anchored to your seat or wherever you’ve had the good fortune to get sucked into this story.

Two weeks ago, the Ferrys had hired Mack Investigations to dig deeper into the first-degree sexual assault charges against their only son. Jason was one of four men charged in the rape of a college freshman at a university in western Michigan.
Charlie didn’t wait for Gil to reply to the demand. “As I’ve told you, Your Honor, I believe we should concentrate on proving Jason’s innocence rather than bashing the victim.”
Bruce slammed his sweating lemonade glass onto the fragile side table with just short of shattering force.
“An aggressive approach is required to contest these false allegations, not political correctness. Jason appears before a grand jury in three weeks. Maybe you’re not the right investigators for us.”
Brenda was on her feet dabbing with a napkin at the wet ring on the cherrywood table. She placed a coaster under the glass and settled a hand on her husband’s trembling shoulder.
“Ms. Mack,” she said “you came highly recommended for your discretion and honesty. Frankly, with no offense meant to Mr. Acosta, we hired your firm believing our son’s defense would have your personal, full-time attention. We hoped you’d be our point person in this work.”
“I understand that but it can’t be helped. I’ve been selected for jury duty on a case expected to take two weeks. Therefore, I’m assigning the case to Mr. Acosta. He’s been fully briefed, he’s a licensed attorney, and he’s very capable.”
“You might have mentioned my name to be excused from your jury obligation,” Judge Ferry muttered. He was still agitated but Brenda had calmed him a bit. His suggestion was offered at lower decibels. Charlie was taken aback.
“I didn’t think it appropriate, sir.”
The judge looked contrite.
“Are you absolutely sure your focus on Jason, and not the girl, is the best strategy?” Brenda asked.
“You’ve told me your son is innocent of the charges against him.” Charlie took in both parents with narrowing eyes. “Is that still your belief?”
Judge Ferry leaned forward in his seat, no longer shaking and fully in control again. He fixed a glare on Charlie that probably made inexperienced courtroom lawyers cower.
“I’m one hundred percent certain of my son’s innocence, Ms. Mack. Jason would confide in me if he’d committed the crime with which he is charged.”
