The Housing Crisis by Kate McLay The Housing Crisis by Kate McLay is a sweet, romantic, new adult novella. It is the story of two women who come together as roommates and develop feelings for one another.

Alyssa’s roommate leaves her suddenly and she is desperate to find someone to help with the rent. Enter Hannah, a sexy lesbian musician. There is attraction between them but Alyssa is worried about the reaction from her conservative family.

The Pros

This is a lovely short read. It is a gentle story that is perfect when you want something not at all taxing. The writing is clean and the pacing is good.

The Cons

No cons really. I enjoyed the novel.

The Conclusion

A very sweet read by McLay. I enjoy the way she writes and this novel was no exception. This is the kind of book that you want to read while travelling or over a weekend because it is an easy, sweet read.

Excerpt from The Housing Crisis by Kate McLay

Despite her mother fretting that she’d end up dead in a gutter after her six months in Chicago, Alyssa thought that she was doing pretty good. It didn’t make the phone calls home any less stressful, and every worried text or email was a simple reminder of two things:

1. Her mother did not trust her to look after herself.

2. She would always be the baby of the family.

But she’d known the second fact for as long as she could remember. That’s what happened when you were the youngest of seven kids. It had been hard to move away. She and her brothers and sisters were close, except for her older brother Johnny, who’d cut himself off from the family when she was five. She’s been thinking about Johnny a lot since leaving home. He as the only one who’d made it out of Iowa; the farthest any of her other siblings had moved was to the Quad Cities. And yet here she was, living it up in Chicago, college degree in hand, a paying job putting food on the table, and a roommate that wasn’t a total nightmare. At times she wanted to just grin at the thought of her independence, but she was riding the L right now and that might give someone the wrong impression. She didn’t want trouble.
