Heart’s Surrender by Emma WeimannHeart’s Surrender by Emma Weimann is a rich girl/poor girl erotic romance that starts with a scorching, one night encounter and ends with so much more. I enjoyed it when I read it on my Kindle a couple of years ago for my original review, and I ended up loving it even more when I listened to the audiobook recently.

Sam Freedman is ready to bail from her best friend’s birthday party at an upscale lesbian bar when a gorgeous femme propositions her, inviting Sam to her apartment close by. After a hotter night than either woman expects, they exchange numbers with the agreement that either can call if they want a date.

Gillian Jennings had a great time with Sam, the sexy butch handywoman, and wants more earth-shattering sex with her. But she hasn’t been widowed long, left with bad memories of a philandering husband, and has two kids to think about. With her life in flux, can she afford to entertain the idea of a relationship?

The Characters

The character work in Hearts Surrender is impressive, particularly for Gillian. After many unhappy years as a society wife, she’s finally learning to pursue her own happiness. The difficulty in balancing expectations with her needs is occasionally painful, especially when Sam gets caught in it, but her journey to the woman we see in the epilogue is relatable and worth reading.

Sam is sweet, sexy, thoughtful, and dependable. She’s respectful of Gillian’s boundaries every step of the way, but has a well-earned wariness and a bundle of trust issues that mean Gillian has to put serious work into the relationship too if she wants it to work.

Tilde, Gillian’s au pere, is probably one of my favourite side characters in all of lesfic. If I ever find myself needing someone to run my house and take care of my kids, may it be someone as smart and funny as her.

The Writing Style

I was pleasantly surprised by Heart’s Surrender. I went into it expecting a quick, dirty read and instead ended up with a book that’s equal parts sexy and emotional. There’s more story than sex, and it ticks all the boxes for me because it is well-paced, has an interesting story and features characters I genuinely invested in.

The Narration

Kathryn Laplante does a fabulous job narrating this story. Her voice has a nice husky quality to it that is perfect for the book’s many sex scenes, and she brings the characters to life beautifully—especially Gillian.

The Pros

Wonderful characters, super hot sex writing, beautiful relationship development, excellent narration, and a fantastic telling off for someone who deserves it. What more could I ask for?

The Cons

There are more typos than I would normally expect in a book from Ylva.

The Conclusion

If you’re looking for a sexy read that will make you feel feelings, look no further (especially if you like audiobooks). Heart’s Surrender is a great book and I hope to see more from Emma Weimann.

Excerpt from Heart’s Surrender by Emma Weimann

Gillian’s eyes were round as she looked up, away, then with a quick brush of her eyes, back at Sam.

Like a spooked animal. Sam bent her head and brushed her lips over Gillian’s. Once, twice, enjoying their softness before breaking the contact again.

Gillian blinked, a slow smile spreading over her face.

Sam smiled. All right. That is a good sign. “I love the way you feel,” she said, touching Gillian’s face and brushing a stray lock of blonde hair out of the woman’s eyes.

“I love the way you kiss,” Gillian replied after a moment’s hesitation. She nuzzled Sam’s palm and pressed a tingling kiss to the center.

Yes. This is going to be fun.
