Heart’s Orders by Jaycie MorrisonHeart’s Orders by Jaycie Morrison is a story about opening your heart to the one you love, making peace with your past so that you can enjoy the present moment and learning to take responsibility for your actions.

It is true, the heart wants what it wants but can the desires of the heart be enough to make you disobey direct orders?

Helen Tucker is bent on accomplishing two things—she wants to work in the motor pool section of the Women’s Army Corps and she wants to make Tee Owens realize that the bond they share is so much more than just a friendly one. Tee Owens is trying to reconcile her Baptist upbringing alongside her feelings for Helen.

Sergeant Gale Rains straddles the fence between two worlds; the Sioux and White worlds. She loves the army but she also loves Bett Smythe. Will she have to choose between the one who her soul loves and her career in the Women’s Army Corps?

Private Bett Smythe wants forever with Sergeant Gale Rains but will she be allowed to have that pleasure, especially since her past and her wealthy family are constantly intruding into her life?

The Characters

Helen Tucker is a private in the Fort Des Moines Women’s Army Corps. She loves anything that involves driving trucks and making herself useful with her hands. I love her caring and assertive personality, she speaks her mind freely and she’s not afraid of showing her emotions. Even though Helen can be a bit impulsive at times, I will always adore her because her faults are what makes her so unique and loveable to me.

Teresa ‘Tee’ Owens is also a private at the Fort Des Moines Women’s Army Corps. She enjoys working in the quartermaster section in the army. My heart really goes out to Teresa because she is so torn between who she has been groomed to be all her life and the person she is at the present moment. She has endured so much pain in her youth and Teresa just makes me feel to reach through my kindle and hug her.

Sergeant Gale Rains is a recruit trainer at the Fort Des Moines Women’s Army Corps. She always encourages her recruits to be the best person they can be and she genuinely cares about the welfare of anyone she is charged with training. I really respect and admire the way Sergeant Gale Rains leads her recruits; she is humble yet stern, she also possesses a kind heart and a forgiving spirit.

Elizabeth ‘Bett’ Smythe is a private at the Fort Des Moines Women’s Army Corps. She is always willing to lend a hand to help out the other privates with their studies. Elizabeth is such a phenomenal woman! She is non-judgmental and she never looks down upon anyone regardless of their status in life or their level of education. I love her open-minded, gregarious and fun-loving personality.

The Writing Style

The author gave me such a vivid description of the Fort Des Moines Army base and the surrounding areas. I also enjoyed the down-to-earth characters who made me laugh with their witty and humorous conversations. In addition, the storyline flowed seamlessly from one scenario to another without a lag or a dull moment.

The Pros

I will always have a tender spot for the women who serve their country. This lovely story gives me a very clear snapshot of what life was like for the women in the army at that period in time.

The Cons

Here I go again, I devoured this lovely story and now I am patiently waiting for the sequel…

aprils favourite booksThe Conclusion

I am so enamored with this awesome story! While I was reading this book I got so caught up in the struggles the characters faced—I felt as though I was experiencing all of the angst, confusion and elation right along with them. There is one thing that I know for sure; this story is going to stay with me for quite some time. These strong-willed women are truly unforgettable and they will capture your heart and attention from the first page.

Excerpt from Heart’s Orders by Jaycie Morrison

Tee was having even more trouble than usual keeping her mind on the morning lessons. She’d hardly been able to keep pace during the exercise period earlier, and after all these weeks that part was practically automatic now. Even though her brain had known that Helen wasn’t there for the past week, her heart couldn’t seem to remember. She’d never stopped looking for Helen’s face in their group, had repeatedly caught herself waiting to start her evening studies as if Helen was about to join her, and found herself longing for the comforting sound of Helen’s now-familiar voice saying good night as the last thing she heard.

Finally, it was the day that Helen was due back, and she couldn’t seem to keep her heart from jumping every time she thought about it. More than once, she’d caught herself wondering if this was what love felt like. Then she would pray that she wouldn’t have those reactions anymore, or try to pretend that everything she was feeling simply applied to any normal friendship.

She knew Helen’s train would arrive just before dinner and Sergeant Rains would go to pick her up. Tee couldn’t bring herself to wait in the mess hall, even though that’s where all of Helen’s other friends would be. She went back to the barracks and unrolled Helen’s mattress, leaving the final version of the note that had taken her most of the week and innumerable sheets of paper to write on Helen’s bunk.
