Fried-Green-Tomatoes-MovieFried Green Tomatoes is one of those films that is based on a book and both the movie and book are brilliant. A good book can be difficult to translate into a good movie because they are such different mediums. But with years of hard work Jon Avnet managed to take the essence of the book and turn it into a brilliant movie.

Fried Green Tomatoes covers the lives of two sets of women.

It is the early 90s and Evelyn is struggling to get her husband to care about more than food and sport. One day, on a visit to her mother in law’s old age home, she meets Mrs Threadgood, a lonely old woman who starts telling her the story of Idgy and Ruth.

It is the story of murder, justice and love.

Through this story Evelyn gains a sense of self and happiness that she has never known before.

Based on Fannie Flagg’s bestselling book, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, this film keeps the essence of the original story while adding elements of magic that can only happen in film.

The Characters and Plot

The characters are memorable and charming. The acting is convincing and although the romance between Idgy and Ruth is tamed down a lot, it is evident that the women love each other.

The Technical Side

A beautifully shot film with a soundtrack so good that will get stuck in your head.

The Pros

One of my favourite movies of all time. It is such a sad, beautiful, happy journey and I have found myself watching it over and over again.

The Cons

I was a little sad that the romance between the women wasn’t more pronounced. The book makes it quite clear that they are in love.

The Conclusion

It is a magnificent film. A must for any lesbian film collection.
