Find Me When I'm Lost by Cheryl A HeadFind Me When I’m Lost by Cheryl A. Head is the fifth book in the Charlie Mack Motown Mystery Series.

Charlie Mack didn’t think her life could have gotten more complicated than it already was but when she was hired by her ex-husband’s new wife, things got messy and extremely awkward very quickly. Her ex-husband, Franklin has been accused of killing his brother-in-law, Peter but Charlie and Pamela both believe that he is innocent and that’s the only thing they can agree on. But here’s the catch, Franklin is on the run and the police believe that his disappearing act proves that he is guilty as ever but Charlie thinks that Franklin has found himself in an unexpected and dangerous situation.

Charlie wants concrete evidence that this demanding case doesn’t involve any double crossing so the Mack Investigations team uses every skill they have in order for them to get the hard facts they need. Unfortunately, this case is also causing trouble in paradise for Charlie and Mandy because Mandy is questioning Charlie’s motives for throwing all of her company’s resources behind finding Franklin. Mandy wants to be reassured that Charlie no longer has any romantic feelings for her ex-husband.

When all is said and done, everyone involved in the case learns that loyalty often ranks higher than love.

The Characters

Charlene “Charlie” Mack, Don and Judy are the three musketeers of the Mack Investigations team. Mandy is a police officer and she is Charlie’s soulmate. I didn’t think that it was possible for me to love these awesome characters more than I already do but my adoration and respect for them has grown ten-fold because of the way they all worked together to juggle a high priority murder investigation and their personal lives. Even though I miss Gil dearly, I must tip my coffee mug to Charlie, Don and Judy because they all have unique talents that they’ve brought to the table and they are definitely a badass private eye team indeed. I am not ashamed to say that I still have a huge crush on Charlie! She is high on my list of fictional wives because I am a sucker for a gorgeous woman with a tender heart and good intentions.

The Writing Style

Cheryl A. Head has done an outstanding job with this story because she has given me an enthralling, fast paced and action-packed mystery that kept me up until the wee hours of the morning. This talented author has also done a wonderful job of bringing not only the characters to life for me but she has also given me a frank and realistic portrayal of each character’s circumstances. Even though the story was mainly told through Charlie’s eyes, I did not feel as though it was one-sided at all because Don, Judy, Mandy, Franklin and the other secondary characters’ points of view came through loud and clear.

The Pros

I don’t think there’s anything better than doing stakeouts, off-the-record snooping around and tagging along with Charlie, Don and Judy while they’re working relentlessly to solve a high profile murder case. My love for “who-done-it” stories will never grow old! I must come clean and admit that I have a special place in my heart for Charlie. I’ve been her unofficial cheerleader and investigating sidekick ever since I’ve read the first book in this captivating mystery series!

The Cons

Zero complaints!

Excerpt from Find Me When I’m Lost by Cheryl A. Head

“Charlie? Are you still there?” Pamela asked.

“Oh. Yes, I’m here. I’m just surprised to hear from you. We’ve never officially met.”

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“How is Franklin? Is anything wrong?”

“Things are terribly wrong.” Pamela’s controlled voice faltered. She began to sob. “Everything is such a mess. I didn’t know who else to call.”

“What’s happened?” Charlie hoped her forcefully asked, direct question would calm the flustered woman.

“Franklin has been charged with first-degree murder. The police think he killed my brother, Peter.”

“What?”

“Last night.”

“No. That can’t be right,” Charlie almost shouted.

Mandy came into the bedroom and stood beside Charlie. “Is it your mom?” Mandy whispered with a worried face.

“No. Franklin is in trouble.”

“Are you speaking to me?” Pamela asked.

“No. Sorry. I was talking to my partner. Do you need me to do something, Mrs. Uh, Pamela? Did Franklin ask you to call me?”

“No. In fact, he’d be angry if he knew I called.”

“I see. Okay. Is Franklin being held downtown?”

“The police say he fled the crime scene. They can’t find him.”

“Have you spoken to him?”

“No. Charlie, I hope it’s okay to call you that, my father thinks I need some outside help. He doesn’t particularly care for Franklin, and he long ago gave up on my brother, but he doesn’t trust the police. My mother is terribly distraught. Daddy is bringing her back to Michigan in a couple of days to… to make preparations for Peter. Daddy wants answers when he gets here.”

“Pamela, slow down. I need to ask you something. Do you believe Franklin killed your brother?” Charlie continued her direct questions. Mandy gripped her arm.

Pamela sobbed. “No. He could never do such a thing.”
