Falling Into Her by Erin ZakFalling Into Her by Erin Zak is an age gap, toaster oven romance that I really enjoyed. I’m especially glad that I listened to it, because the narrator took a great book and made it even better!

Kathryn Hawthorne is very happy with her one-night stands and isn’t interested in a serious relationship after having her heart ripped out a few years prior. One day she stops at an upscale aromatherapy boutique and Kathryn finds herself attracted to the woman who works there, so she slips her a note with her mobile number.

Pam Phillips is finally living life on her own terms after recently burying her husband of 21 years. Getting a job at the boutique is empowering, but she doesn’t expect it to lead to a life-changing friendship with a woman—especially one who’s eight years her junior.

Kathryn makes it clear that she only wants a friendship, but she and Pam can’t stop their mutual attraction. Can two women who are in such different emotional places make a relationship work?

The Characters

I really enjoyed spending time with Kathryn and Pam. They’re both likeable and have great chemistry, and they each have character arcs that worked well. Their banter is also fabulous, and if you’ve been following my reviews for a while, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of quality banter.

I kind of wanted to throttle Pam’s best friend Judy for, well, reasons. I can’t talk about it without spoilers, but wow did she ever make me angry for Pam and Kathryn.

The Writing Style

I liked the way Falling Into Her is written. The romance has a nice burn that’s slow without being too slow. And while I’m glad that lesfic isn’t all coming out stories anymore, I enjoyed this particular one because it shows how it can happen in a person’s 40s.

The Narration

The narration for this book was FABULOUS. Seriously, L.W. Salinas knocked it out of the park and I found myself sneaking extra opportunities to listen to her bring this compelling story to life. She was the perfect Pam, and she did a great job with the other characters too. Also, Salinas’s delivery for the crisis scene was one of the best I’ve heard in an audiobook because the full, gut-wrenching emotion was there for us to take in.

The Pros

Everything worked for me! The characters were engaging, the story was interesting, the romance made me happy, and the sex scenes were hot. I mean, I didn’t like that one character… but I don’t think I was supposed to.

The Cons

I didn’t have any.

Excerpt from Falling Into Her by Erin Zak

“I’m trying to find a birthday present.”

“A gift? Well, this is your lucky day. Gifts just happen to be my specialty.” Pam’s eyes lit up. “Who is it for? Anyone special?”

“No judging?”

“I would never judge. Promise,” Pam replied. She held three fingers in the air. “Girl Scouts’ honor.”

Kathryn chuckled and then said with an embarrassed tone, “My mom. Her party is in,” she checked her watch, “two hours.”

“Oh, so you’re a procrastinator? Remind me to never expect a gift on time from you, then.”

Kathryn’s mouth fell open in shock. “Hey, you said no judging! And aren’t you supposed to make me feel better about this? So I actually buy something? ‘Salesperson of the Year Award’ should clearly not go to you.”

Pam’s eyes sparkled. “A procrastinator and a comedian with a sharp tongue? Amazing.”

“Lady, you have no idea.” The corner of Kathryn’s mouth turned up, and she raised an eyebrow slightly. Kathryn felt the familiar feeling of butterflies springing to life in her stomach. She flashed her megawatt smile and reached over to touch Pam’s arm. “Do you want to hear my awesome excuse?”

“I feel like I need to now.”

Kathryn noticed Pam glance at her hand and then back up to her eyes. She wondered if she had overstepped a boundary. “I can’t stand my mom, and she’s a judgmental, mean-spirited bully.”

“Well, in that case,” Pam leaned in toward Kathryn and lowered her voice, “Bath and Body Works is just around the corner.”
