Ex-Wives-of-Dracula-by-Georgette-KaplanEx-Wives of Dracula by Georgette Kaplan has it all. Action! Comedy! Romance! Although it isn’t really about being Dracula’s ex-wife.

Mindy’s childhood friend, Lucia, is beautiful but she and Mindy haven’t spoken since Lucia went from being cute to sexy. When Mindy finds herself on Lucia’s porch delivering pizza and wrapping up her bloody foot, their friendship is re-kindled. Things escalate quickly and Mindy finds herself spending almost all her time with Lucia. Not long after that, Mindy confesses to Lucia that she might be gay. Lucia swears up and down that she isn’t a lesbian, so why does she keep kissing her? It also doesn’t help matters when Lucia gets turned into a vampire. Convinced that killing the vampire that bit Lucia will cure her, the two set out to find Dracula.

The Characters

Lucia West has blond hair, blue eyes, and was a high school cheerleader ta’ boot. Ever since Lucia grew up from an adorable little girl to a sexy young woman, she’s been in with the cool kids. She comes from a broken family and tends to be a firecracker.

Lucia is my favorite character. I will re-read this novel solely to visit her again. I love-love-loved her confidence and witty tongue. Her insecurities were well-written, making her even more lovable. You only see her through Mindy’s eyes, which adds to the mystique of Lucia.

Mindy Murphy is a straight A student with her feet firmly planted on the ground. She has lived next to Lucia since she was young. She has short red hair and an awkward sense of style.

She is Lucia’s rock – her voice of reason. The two couldn’t be more opposite yet they work together like peanut butter and jelly.

The Writing Style

This book is hilarium (funnier than hilarious). I was laughing constantly. There are a lot of pop culture references and vulgar language.

The whole book is told from Mindy’s perspective which works well.

The Pros

Oh, where do I start? I loved it all! From start to finish I enjoyed everything. It’s HILARIUM, it has great romance, and page-turning action.

The Cons

Lucia has a boyfriend when the novel starts and there is a dildo that is referred to as a penis twice. There is nothing too in-depth about heterosexual sex and there is no focus on it, but I just wanted to warn readers.

The only other con is that the book ended.

brooklyn-faveConclusion

I’m putting this on my re-read list. I honestly had to stop myself when I finished from turning back to page 1 and just reading the whole book again.

The jokes are on point and the relationship between Lucy and Mindy is touching. Its mystery and action are enthralling. I really couldn’t focus on anything but this story for a few days. I ate, slept, and breathed Ex-Wives of Dracula. If you talked to me, I listened, but I was totally thinking about this book.

Lucy does have a boyfriend in the beginning and it says some things about their sex life but it didn’t turn me off the story at all. It also helped develop Lucia’s character.

Side note: If you read or are reading this book PLEASE tweet me! I would love to talk about it with anyone who’s willing.

Excerpt from Ex-Wives of Dracula by Georgette Kaplan

“So how far can you hear?” Mindy asked, curious. And something else.

“Never really measured it,” Lucia said like she was speaking through a fan. She stopped herself, forehead knitted, concentrating. “Guy in the house at the end of the street is watching porn.”

“You’re guessing.”

“It has a Lord of the Rings theme.”

“Okay, you can stop there.”

“Love to.” Lucia cracked her neck like she was turning off a radio.

“So you can hear someone in the other room no problem?”

“No problem whatsoever.”

“Like, if you were in my bedroom and I were in the shower…”

“I heard you moan,” Lucia interrupted. “And I wasn’t listening, I just heard.”

Oh. Oh God. Mindy felt like beating her head against the wall. Nice, Murphy. Real nice. Here they were building a relationship and Lucia had heard her jackin’in the shower. Goddamn. Son of a bitch!
