DEBS-movie-reviewDEBS is a quirky, fun romp through the world of the D.E.B.S, an elite team of paramilitary college super-spies.

The top DEB is Amy Bradshaw and when Lucy Diamond, a sultry crime boss, enters the picture Amy is immediately drawn to her. So, when Lucy kidnaps Amy as a romantic gesture, Amy doesn’t put up much of a fight.

While the film does do a lot of the cheesy typical romance things like pair up a brunette with a blond, a good girl with a bad, it does it in a really lovely and quirky way.

For those of you who are anti male characters, Amy has a boyfriend at the beginning of the film who she breaks up with. Throughout the film he is trying to get back together with her.

I liked the way Angela Robinson treated the male characters in this film. They were people too and had little sub plots. I enjoy a well rounded point of view of the world and while males may be in some ways stinkier than women and not nearly as fun to look at, guys aren’t all bad.

The Characters and Plot

There is a charming assortment of characters and some lovely side plots. There are number of fun elements to this story including Holland Taylor and Michael Clark Duncan as representatives of the DEBS head office.

The Technical Side

This is a well made film with a fun, spunky soundtrack.

The Pros

This is a light, wonderfully quirky and funny film that should be in every lesbian film collection. It is one of my personal favourites.

There is a brilliant scene where Lucy Diamond sings the Erasure song A Little Respect.

The Cons

Angela Robinson, the director, didn’t make more lesbian films.

The Conclusion

If you enjoy a tongue in cheek sense of humour, a comic book style film and an altogether not to be taken seriously film then you will love this. I do.
