Coyote Sky by Gerri HillCoyote Sky by Gerri Hill is a romance between a writer and a small town cop.

Kate Winters is the author of a popular mystery series but she has lost her inspiration. In an attempt to find it again she takes up an offer from her long time friend, Brenda, to visit her in Coyote, New Mexico.

Kate leaves behind her apartment in Dallas, and her girlfriend Robin, venturing into the eccentric small town filled with an assortment of locals including artists, psychics and a small town cop who is as infuriating as she is alluring.

Lee Foxx spends her days solving the minor local crimes and showing the young tourists hospitality in the form of a lot of one night stands. Lee enjoys the freedom of her life even if she can’t say she has ever really been in love. She likes her job and the nature surrounding her is ideal for an outdoorsy person like herself.

When Lee and Kate meet then Lee begins to realise that perhaps settling down isn’t the worst idea in the world. And Kate finally takes on board feedback from local readers as to why her last two books have been lacklustre. But realisation and action are too different things and Kate struggles to come to terms with how her main character changes.

Kate and Lee dance around one another as incredible chemistry and tensions build and when Kate’s girlfriend unexpectedly comes to town for a visit sparks fly. How can Kate trust the strong feelings she has for Lee when she is weary of the woman who seems to have a new bed mate every night? And why does Lee feel so empty at the thought of being alone now?

The Characters

We see more of Kate than Lee and her internal journey is one of self discovery. As she discovers what love can feel like so her writing grows and she realises what she wants from life.

I liked Kate. She was a bit uptight and frustratingly naive in some respects but she didn’t have bad intentions.

Lee was a great character, I enjoyed how much she loved the town and her story of how she ended up becoming the local cop. I also found her character endearing in a way that I didn’t find Kate to be.

This is a fairly typical pairing in lesfic though, so if you like books where the one character is a little more uptight and the other is a little more rakish until she meets the right woman then this is a great book for you.

The Writing Style

Gerri Hill writes well. You can’t help but feel things when you read or listen to her books and this one was no exception.

I enjoyed the small town characters and how the locals were pushing to get Kate and Lee together. I liked the incorporation of the moment when Kate and Lee went to an outlook to watch the Coyote Sky happen and I loved the chemistry.

The Narration

Abby Craden is an excellent narrator. She keeps the largish cast of characters clear throughout and I never wondered who was speaking. Her pacing is good and she pairs excellently with Hill’s writing. The phrase dream team comes to mind when I think them.

Fun fact: I learned that I was pronouncing piton incorrectly. I was initially thrown when I heard it so I googled it and now my world is forever changed.

The Pros

I loved the writing, narration and the overall story that reminded me so much of the kinds of lesfic romances that I would devour when I first came to lesfic.

The Cons

Heads up, technically Kate cheats on her girlfriend with Lee. But Hill does soften it when the girlfriend finds out so I don’t know if it will bother folks who are generally upset by cheating.

The Conclusion

This book is a solid romance with excellent narration and a sweet enough storyline that I enjoyed it. I would say add this to your collection if you love angsty romances with sexy, butch characters and tightly assed city dwellers who learn to relax when they finally find passion.

Excerpt from Coyote Sky by Gerri Hill

“Oh, my,” she whispered. “Look. Have you ever seen a sexier sight?”

Kate followed her gaze, watching long bare legs swing out of a dusty Jeep. Her eyes moved past scuffed hiking boots and up very toned thighs, her mind not quite acknowledging the gun and holster strapped to the woman’s waist. A brilliant white sleeveless shirt contrasted nicely with her healthy tan but it was the hazel, laughing eyes that held Kate’s attention as the woman pulled her sunglasses off.

“Brenda! Good to see you,” the woman said as she walked toward their car.

“Lee,” Brenda greeted. She got out, motioning for Kate to do the same. “I want you to meet my friend, Kate.”

Lee bent at the waist, peering into the car as Kate fumbled with the door. Lee opened it for her, stepping back as an embarrassed Kate crawled from the car. This was the sex maniac sheriff?

“Thank you.”

Lee grinned. “All my pleasure.”

“Kate, this is Lee, the county sheriff. Lee, Kate Winters.”

“I’ve read your books, Miss Winters. Well, I don’t think I’ve managed to get through the last one yet. Very nice to meet you.”

Kate stared at the hand that was held out to her. She was nearly afraid to touch it. But she politely extended her own, surprised at its softness.

“Nice to meet you too. Brenda has told me a little about you.” Kate could hear the distaste in her own voice and hoped this woman wouldn’t notice. She didn’t intend to be rude to the sex maniac.

Again, the laughing eyes captured Kate’s. “She has?” Lee turned to Brenda. “Spreading nasty rumors, Simone?”
