CloudburstThe Cloudburst movie is one  that I have wanted to see for a while. I really like Olympia Dukakis and the trailer for the film looked cute.

When it started and I saw that it was a Wolfe film I wanted to cry. I do not generally like Wolfe films. But I persevered and was so pleased that I did.

Brenda Fricker and Olympia Dukakis play a couple, Dot and Stella respectively, who have been together for 31 years. Dot is blind now and her granddaughter tries to put her in a nursing home believing that they can look after her better than her “friend” Stella.

Stella won’t allow Dot to be taken from her and she breaks Dot out of the home in order to go on a grand adventure to Canada where they will get married.

On the way to Canada they pick up a young hitchhiker named Prentice. Together the three go on a life changing journey with the highs and lows of a good drama.

The Characters and Plot

The plot was really simple and yet allowed for the complexities of human relationships to become the main focus rather than what happened. I love stories like this because they are layered and beautiful.

The Technical Side

A well produced film. The soundtrack, cinematography and editing told the story perfectly, matching the gentle pace and character driven narrative.

This is exactly the sort of film that lesbian filmmakers should try and produce. A good film driven by a solid story and acting. I think too often lesbian films try to be all deep and meaningful without a solid story behind the film.

Also, I do not believe that it is mandatory to get lesbians to play lesbians. Hetrosexual actresses can be better actors with more experience and often have better on screen chemistry. It really is about being able to act.

The Pros

Fricker and Dukakis have both won Oscars and it is not difficult to see why. Their performances were spectacular.

The Cons

The only con is that I do not have this film in my collection, I caught it on Netflix.

The Conclusion

If you are looking for a story that is about people, and love and finding yourself on a life changing journey then this is the film for you.
