Cavalcade by K’Anne Meinel is a romantic historical novel about facing your fears and taking risks anyway and creating a family with love as the sturdy foundation.

Everything happens for a reason, right? After the death of her parents and losing the farm to the bank, Molly tries really hard to find the silver lining in her predicament. Molly was beyond grateful for Erin’s generosity because she took her in when she had nowhere else to go. Who would have thought that Molly would have fallen in love with Erin—her best friend and closest confidant? Molly always thought that she would get married to a man and have children one day because that is what everyone expected a beautiful woman like her to do but she never thought that she would fall in love with a woman.

Erin knew that it would be impossible for her to keep her farm and the woman she loves because her neighbors would not allow them to live in peace and they would ostracize them. Therefore, Erin chose to follow her heart instead of doing what was expected of her. She made the heartbreaking decision to sell the beloved family farm and face an uncertain future and the rugged terrain on the Oregon trail.

Erin and Molly agreed to live as ‘man and wife’ in order for them to stay together and create the family they have always wanted. They opened their arms and their hearts when they adopted a family by giving them a new beginning with delightful experiences and an unforgettable journey in their pursuit for happiness.

Will Erin and Molly be able to navigate the hazardous Oregon trail and find their forever home?

The Characters

Erin is a farmer at heart and she sold the farm that has been in her family for generations so that she would be able to settle down and have a peaceful life with Molly. She set out on a long and perilous journey with Molly because she wanted them to have a new beginning where nobody knows them and they would be able to live as ‘man and wife’. I know I would be fangirling here but please bear with me because I just LOVE butch women! I adored Erin’s tenacity, industrious ways and her generous nature. Don’t get me started on the way she showers Molly with affection; in everything that she does and in every decision she makes, Erin clearly shows how much she adores Molly.

Molly is Erin’s soulmate and she works alongside Erin by taking care of the animals and doing whatever tasks are necessary in order for them to have a smooth journey to Oregon. She is such a sweetheart and I love everything about her because anyone who loves children and animals as much as I do will always have a special place in my heart. Molly is always there to support Erin through any difficult situation and she is not afraid to defend the love of her life from any threat.

The Writing Style

The beautiful descriptions of the vast landscape that Molly and Erin have travelled made me turn so green with envy because I would love to see those wonderful sights as well! I had a good laugh at the way the author described the personalities of the animals that accompanied the Herriot family on their journey. In addition, the dialogue and the scenarios flowed seamlessly and there wasn’t a dull moment in this story.

The Pros

I really enjoyed learning about the daily tasks that farmers have to do in order to keep their livestock healthy. I also enjoyed reading about the entire journey Erin and Molly took as they braved the unknown to get to Oregon.

The Cons

I loved everything about this story so you’ll get no complaints from me!

aprils favourite booksThe Conclusion

This is a story that will tug at your heartstrings and it will leave you wanting more; more of these fearless and amazing women and more of the breathtaking sights they enjoyed on their journey. I must say that this story made me pull a marathon session of reading because I didn’t get any errands or household chores done until it ended and I regret nothing because I enjoyed every minute I spent with my kindle in my hand.

Excerpt from Cavalcade by K’Anne Meinel

“We are going to have to practice speaking properly, so people don’t know we are from this area,” she pointed out.

“There’s time enough to start talkin’ proper.”

“If you start now, it’ll come automatically when it’s important.” Molly handed Erin a plate with two sandwiches cut from the bread she had baked that morning. She made her own butter and had grown the cucumbers herself. Cress from the creek added a mint flavor to their delicious sandwiches. “Think there’ll be cress in the creeks out west?”

“I don’t know. We’ll have to dry out some of the cress roots and bring it along.”

“We’re gonna need a second wagon at this rate,” she teased. She already had stacks and stacks of seeds she was bringing, harvested from her best plants and carefully labelled and folded in tissue paper.

“I’d like that, but I think one wagon is all we can afford, if we can find one,” she said sadly as she enjoyed the sandwich.

“I can drive,” Molly asserted stoutly.

“I don’t doubt your drivin’. It’s the others I worry about. That letter was pretty particular that it has to be a Con-a-sto-ga wagon,” she enunciated. “I don’ know where I’m gonna find one of ’em.”

“Well, the good Lord will provide.”

Erin didn’t want to hurt Molly’s feelings. Her retort would have been, “The good Lord helps those that helps themselves,” but she didn’t want to argue with her. They were going to make this dream of theirs a reality. They’d been planning it practically since Molly moved onto the farm. They knew, once they realized they were in love and not just merely friends, that they couldn’t stay. They wanted to start over somewhere else. Wagon trains were crossing the Great American Desert to the west all the time now, and she had written to someone she faintly knew, asking about being included and wanting to know who she needed to write. She was later given a list of what she needed to bring. Buying a new Conestoga wagon was beyond their current budget. They needed all their money to make this move. In the meantime, they were saving everything they could towards the move.
