Hazel Yeats Bunny Finds A Friend review on The Lesbian ReviewBunny Finds A Friend by Hazel Yeats is her debut novel. It is a unique romance novel with a balance of quirky whimsy and self-exploration that I haven’t seen anywhere else before.

Cara Jong doesn’t want to be tied down by any woman or career, and in the run up to Christmas she’s having one hell of a bad day. Her girlfriend has left her for a formerly straight coworker and she has to serve court papers to Jude Donovan while he’s playing Santa at one of the malls in Amsterdam. Except Jude Donovan isn’t a he. Jude is a she with beautiful eyes and a smart mouth.

Days after serving Jude, Cara can’t stop thinking about her and those eyes and is shocked to learn that she’s THE Jude Donovan, wildly successful children’s author of the Bunny series. Through a silly misunderstanding involving a bunny suit and a roomful of eager toddler fans, Cara and Jude finally properly meet, talk, and fall madly into lust with each other, and eventually maybe even love. But can they make it work when Cara has nothing to offer and Jude is a single mom who’s a little gunshy following a bad divorce?

The Characters

I liked most of the characters in Bunny Finds a Friend. Cara has the most growth, since this is really her story. She thinks she’s carefree while her sisters think she’s irresponsible, and she spends a lot of time figuring out who she is and who she wants to be.

I liked Jude, but I would have appreciated seeing more from her perspective. Since Cara and Jude spend a significant portion of the book apart, she was the hardest character to get to know, even compared to Cara’s sisters.

Speaking of the sisters, I liked how their relationships were portrayed. They love each other, but it’s messy sometimes, and that works well because it’s so honest. Inge and her husband’s struggle with infertility and how that’s difficult when Myra and her husband clearly don’t have that issue is also handled well. I didn’t particularly like Alice, but I don’t think I was supposed to.

The Writing Style

What makes Bunny Finds A Friend so special to me is that while, yes, it is a romance novel, it’s also about coming of age in your early 30s. As much as movies and tv want us to believe that people figure out who they are in their teens and early 20s, a lot of people don’t figure it out until later on. So while this might sound a little cheesy, I think there’s something beautiful about Cara figuring out how to love herself so she has the confidence that she can be a good partner to someone else.

The Pros

Every interaction between Cara and Jude is magic and manages to be sexy even with fade-to-black sex scenes. Perfectly imperfect family interactions keep things real. Amsterdam’s bridges sound great and now I want to see them.

The Cons

This isn’t a con for me, but if you’re expecting a typical romance novel, this isn’t the book for you. Also, I mentioned above that infertility is discussed, so if this a trigger for you, you might want to skip ahead when it comes up.

Excerpt from Bunny Finds a Friend by Hazel Yeats

“Why Ms. Donovan,” Cara said, “are you trying to say you want to woo me?”

Jude pulled her arm back. “I can’t stand you when you’re cocky,” she said.

Cara was laughing out loud now. She rested her hand on Jude’s shoulder and looked at her. “I want to woo you too,” she said, suddenly serious.

They stopped and began to lean into each other again, but just before their lips met, Jude pulled back. “Whoa!” she said. “I don’t think this is going to work unless we put a little distance between us.” She looked at Cara and shook her head. “I can’t be trusted around you. I used to be so respectable, now look at me.”

Cara sighed. “What about the state you got me in?”

“You do look a little flushed .” Jude grinned. “I’m sure it’s nothing a cold shower won’t cure though.”

Cara pushed her teasingly. “You’re killing me here.”

Jude shook her head. “I hate to think what it would do to Santa’s reputation, as well as to my own, if I got myself arrested for indecent exposure.” She rested her dark eyes on Cara. “So how about that date?”

Cara nodded. “I would love to go out with you.”

Jude took her hand and kissed it. “I promise I will be a perfect lady this time.”

“Ugh,” Cara said. “Where’s the fun in that? Please, promise me you’ll be anything but.”
