BooksmartBooksmart is a sweet coming of age film about two best friends in their last few days of high school.

Amy and Molly rule the school (well, in their minds anyway). They get excellent grades and Molly is convinced they are the only ones who got into really good universities because they spent their time studying and not doing frivolous things like going to parties.

When Molly discovers that there are other kids who also got into really good universities she realises that others managed to party AND study. It’s with this in mind that she decides that she and Amy need to attend the big party the night before graduation. It’s something they have to do in order to round off their high school experience.

Amy is crushing on a girl named Ryan and Molly uses this to persuade Amy to join her in their big adventure, after all, Ryan will be at the party and it could be Amy’s big chance to finally hook up with her.

The night turns into a series of wacky and wild adventures as the two girls try to find the party and instead find a whole lot of other fun, awkward and often strange events.

The Technical Side

I streamed the film from Amazon prime and used headphones to listen. Headphones means that I will hear any funny sound issues and honestly the sound and production quality were both excellent.

It’s not a super high budget film and it doesn’t need to be. It is, however, a wonderful example of what you can do with a great script and excellent director.

My Favourite Parts

I loved how cute and funny it was. I also loved that Wilde took such care with the lesbian character’s story. And for a debut film it has me excited about what else Olivia Wilde will be directing in the future.

Heads Up

This is a buddy movie that concentrates on the exploits of two best friends in a 24 hour period of time. Amy is a lesbian and her storyline is about catching the eye of the girl she likes, but it’s not the main thrust of the film

Just so you know, Molly is heterosexual but super supportive of her friend. It’s actually kind of adorable how cute they are as besties.

The Conclusion

Olivia Wilde did a beautiful job of directing this film. It is full of witty one liners, heart stopingly awkward moments and a fantastic cast that highlights the kinds of weirdos we love to watch in high school movies.

I absolutely recommend you watch it when you are feeling in the mood for that high school buddy, coming of age, funny movie.

And what made me a happy happy little lesbian is that Amy does get a cute happy ending – but I am not going to tell you more so I don’t spoil it.
