Erica Lawson is the author of one of my favourite novels, Reflected Passion. So, naturally I had to include her.
And an important side note, Erica has excellent taste in films. I agree wholeheartedly with her favourite lesbian film.
This is what she says about her work:
Your Writing
A brief description of your writing:
I write in a lot of different genres – science fiction, mystery, police procedural, space opera, historical drama, comedy. All of these books have an element of mystery and action in them.
One word to describe your books:
Diverse
Who/What inspired you to start writing?
I was in a Xena chatroom around 2005 when the girls there encouraged me to try writing something. My first effort wasn’t good, however I did a Xena piece and it was a big success. My first foray into writing was Xena, and this gave me the confidence to expand to original fiction.
Why lesbian fiction?
I’m very comfortable writing lesbian fiction. I feel I understand it and I love the character interaction.
If someone is new to your work, which of your books should she read first?
Not everyone likes sci-fi, so I would suggest either Possessing Morgan or Reflected Passion. If someone is looking for sci-fi, then definitely Soulwalker.
What inspired you to write Possessing Morgan?
This story began as a short story for a Xena Bard Challenge. I liked the characters so much I expanded it into a book. This was my first novel.
What inspired you to write Reflected Passion?
A friend had come up with an idea for a book and I took on the challenge. It’s an unusual book in that it has three different perspectives on events that occur, but I think it works well.
When I originally came up with this idea it was going to be a completely different type of sci-fi, set in outer space and way into the future. Happily it didn’t end up that way and it has become a favorite story of mine. I am very much a “pantster” when I write, that is I don’t plan the plot beforehand. I let it unfold while I write. I usually have an idea of what I want to include in the book and where it’s going to end up, but that’s it. I don’t sit down and plot out the entire book because my characters have a way of changing direction on me – often.
What inspired you to write Out of Retirement?
Again, this started as a Xena Bard Challenge back in 2007, but the characters were so lovable I just had to write a longer story. I really enjoy writing comedy and these characters practically write themselves. I hope they have a long and happy life.
