The Rainbow Cedar by Gerri HillThe Rainbow Cedar by Gerri Hill is the story of finding a perfect love while being in a long term relationship with someone who is completely wrong for you.

Jay is an interior designer who loves designing and has started her own business. When we first meet her she is in her car on her way to have lunch with her best friend. As she is looking for parking she gets distracted by a gorgeous woman and she ends up crashing into the back of the woman’s truck.

As it turns out the woman is Drew, a successful landscape designer. Not only is she sexy and but she helps Jay get a contract that could launch her business.

Chemistry between Drew and Jay is undeniable. They can’t stop thinking about one another, they look for reasons to be together and show all the signs of being meant to be.

But, as with all great romances, there is an obstacle. In this story the obstacle is Jay’s eight year relationship with Katherine. While Katherine and Jay hardly see one another anymore as Katherine is perpetually at the office working late into the night and leaving early in the morning, they do still live together and they are in a long-term relationship.

When Katherine whisks Jay off to Hawaii along with Katherine’s ex flame and Drew things become even more complicated. But will Jay have the guts to leave her long term relationship and the stability of it in favour of something that could be perfect?

Pros And My Favourite Parts

Abby Craden did a great job narrating the nuances of this one. Craden is a master narrator and I can guarantee that if the book is narrated by her then I will enjoy it.

Cons And Heads Up

Jay is in a serious, committed relationship with Katherine. Katherine is portrayed as a self serving, nasty, cheating person who cares for nothing but money and status. I get that we needed to feel nothing for Katherine in order to want Jay and Drew to become a couple, but I can’t help wonder why Jay stayed with Katherine for eight years. It felt mildly contrived.

The Conclusion

I enjoyed this audiobook. Hill is a good writer, her words flow easily and coupled with Craden you can be sure it’s a winning audiobook.

The cheating aspect is pretty clear but Hill does a lot of work to make it feel less like a betrayal and more like an inevitability of a failing relationship. Still, if you are averse to cheating, this book may be a little tough for you.

All in all I enjoyed it and am glad I put in the time with this one. The story is sweet the main characters are lovely and there is an adorable element of meant to be together.

Excerpt from The Rainbow Cedar by Gerri Hill

Chapter One

“Order me a margarita,” Jay said. “I’m at the light.” She paused and smiled. “And before you say it, yes, I’m the idiot who suggested we come at five o’clock.”

She flipped her phone closed and tossed it on the seat beside her, her fingers drumming impatiently on the steering wheel as she waited for the light to turn green. Five o’clock traffic had the downtown area moving at a snail’s pace, but she could see the flashing light of her favorite women’s bar. Although bar was a stretch of the imagination. It was really just a greasy hamburger joint that served the best margaritas in downtown Austin.

Her gaze slipped from the red light to the street, trying to spy a parking spot within a reasonable distance when she spied something much more attractive. Tall and lean—army-green shorts hiding what appeared to be fantastic thighs, and a ball cap pulled low with a short ponytail of brown hair peeking out the back—the woman bent over and slipped her feet into brown leather sandals. Nice feet. Nice ass.

A honk behind her signaled the light had turned and Jay pulled forward, glancing to the side for one last look. But her jaw dropped open as the woman pulled her T-shirt off, her bronzed torso glistening in nothing but a bright red sports bra.

“Oh, my God,” she murmured, her eyes glued to the woman who now held a crisp white tank top in her hands. She’s beautiful.

But her thoughts—and her movement—were halted as her tiny, gas-saving hybrid plowed into the back of a gas-guzzling truck
