A Treat for Halloween Tricksters by R J Nolan is a sweet and spicy contemporary lesbian short story. Dr Jess McKenna and Dr Kim Donovan are celebrating their first Halloween as a couple. It’s also their first Halloween in their new home. Jess is excited to decorate and celebrate her favorite holiday – until she finds out from a neighbor that no children come out their way and down their long driveway for treats. Kim sees the disappointment on her lover’s face and comes up with the perfect way for Jess to share her favorite holiday with kids, and Kim.
Both characters were introduced in R J Nolan’s 2013 lesbian romance, LA Metro. Dr Kimberly Donovan arrived at her new job at LA Metro with a heart full of betrayal. But when she meets the Chief of Emergency Services, Dr Jess McKenna, the attraction is immediate and mutual. I got just a taste of Jess and Kim’s relationship in this story and it reminded me of one of my favorite Halloween candies – the Fireball – sweet on the outside, and cinnamon hot on the inside.
The Writing Style
The dialogue is fun and snappy and the story is a Halloween treat.
This is a fun lunch time Halloween read, with some serious heat along with the love and laughs of two interesting characters.
I wanted more of Jess and Kim’s story, and thanks to my Kindle I’ve solved that little problem and downloaded LA Metro.
I liked it. This was my first introduction to R J Nolan’s work. If you like lesbian medical romance, you’ll like her books. I went to her website and it looks like she has a few more for us to enjoy even after Halloween!
Excerpt from A Treat for Halloween Tricksters by R J Nolan
“Come on. Tell me,” Jess said as she pulled into a parking spot in front of the community center. Her gaze swept Kim’s body, and she licked her lips. She leaned across the console. “I’ll make it worth your while.” Even if you don’t tell me.
Kim put her hand in the middle of Jess’s chest and straight-armed her back to her own side of the vehicle. “Oh no, you don’t. You already tried that.”
And enjoyed every second of it, too. Which is why we’re running late.
“I’m not telling you what my costume is. You’ll just have to wait until tomorrow night.”
“Fine. Be like that.” Jess huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. “I’m not telling you either, then.” She struggled to keep a straight face. A moment later, she lost the battle and burst out laughing.
