I’m so excited to share the 10 best friends to lovers romances with all of you. As someone who married their best friend, this theme and many of the books below hold a special place in my heart.

Why many? Because I’ve also included some of Sheena, Brooklyn, and Laney’s favourites too. As always, this isn’t an exhaustive list and I know some of your favourites may be missing, but these are books we adored and hope you enjoy them too.

All That Matters by Susan X Meagher1. All That Matters by Susan X Meagher

Published by Brisk Press

This book is a: toaster oven romance like no other

What it’s about

Life is going damned well for Blair Spencer. She s a very successful real estate agent, happily married to a man who encourages her to live the independent life she loves and they’re actively working to have a baby.

The wrench in the works is that Blair favors adoption, while her husband David desperately wants to have a biological child. The fates are against them, and they finally seek the help of a group of reproductive specialists. One of the doctors, a surgeon named Kylie Mackenzie, eventually becomes a good friend to Blair. And she needs all of the friends she can get when things start to go horribly wrong at home. As her marriage teeters on the brink of collapse, she relies more and more on Kylie s friendship.

Kylie s happily gay; Blair s happily straight. But the way they structure their relationship leads friends and family to privately question whether the pair is setting themselves up for heartache. They eventually come to a crossroads, which could e

ither destroy their friendship or turn it into what each of them has been seeking. The question is whether each woman can change her view of herself and her needs. The answer is all that matters.

Why I love it

Kylie and Blair are one of my favourite lesfic couples ever and their story is just so beautiful. We get to join them as they first meet and then follow as they forge a strong friendship before eventually becoming lovers. There’s no way you can read this book and not believe in their happily ever after.

Southern Girl by Renee J Lukas2. Southern Girl by Renee J. Lukas

Published by Bella Books

This book is a: young adult smalltown romance

What it’s about

Growing up in the 70s and 80s in Tennessee leaves Jesse Aimes confused about pretty much everything. Nothing makes sense to her at all. Not bell-bottoms or crazy teachers and especially not boys. But when she finally wins a spot on the high school basketball team, she begins to feel comfortable in her own skin.

Then her childhood best friend Stephanie comes back to town and stirs feelings in Jesse that leave her even more confused. She knows those feelings must be wrong. She only has to listen to the “you’re going to hell” sermons by her preacher father to know it.

But romance secretly blossoms between the two girls…until their secret is blown wide open by a jealous classmate. As the truth comes out it threatens everything—Jesse’s future in basketball, her family and even her relationship with Stephanie. What can she do when there seems to be no way out?

Why Sheena loves it

This is a great book. It is well written, interesting and so worth the read. I loved the emotional turmoil because while it was filled with angst it was real angst. It was like Lukas held a mirror up to my childhood in a small town and said – here you go – take a look at all of the feelings you had.

Always Alex by Robin Alexander3. Always Alex by Robin Alexander

Published by Intaglio Publications

This book is a: hilarious read that made me laugh out loud many times

What it’s about

Dana Castilaw grew up tossing coins in a well, hoping her wishes would come true, but the candy fountain, puppy, and love never seemed to manifest. At eighteen, she left her hometown of Barbier Point, Louisiana, longing to be free of her father’s chokehold on her life and with a heart full of dreams she hoped would come true. Years later, she is forced to return home with at least one granted wish—her daughter, Sydney.

Alex Soileau stood at Dana’s side for years tossing her coins into the well, making the same wish each time, a secret plea that she refused to reveal even to her best friend. Time and maturity insisted that she give up on her one fervent desire, but her heart never would.

Reunited as adults, both women realize that maybe there was magic in the well after all.

Why I love it

It’s funny, it’s sexy, it’s sweet, and it has wonderful characters. It basically has everything I love all in one place.

Love Waits by Gerri Hill4. Love Waits by Gerri Hill

Published by Bella Books

This book is a: second chance romance between highschool sweethearts

What it’s about

High school sweethearts…and nobody knew. Ashleigh Pence had been the all-American high school girl: cheerleader, prom queen…and in love with another girl. Gina Granbury hasn’t thought about Calloway High in twenty years, but the arrival of the invitation to the class reunion brings back memories of Ashleigh and the betrayal that drove them apart. With no real choice, Ashleigh has to go the event, hoping that it’s not the one reunion that Gina decides to attend after all these years. Gina had expected to dismiss the possibility as easily as she has during all the years since, but the curiosity is suddenly strong. Her long-broken heart has never mended, but that’s no reason to go back in time…is it? Twenty years seem like yesterday in this latest passionate story from Golden Crown award winner Gerri Hill.

Why Laney loves it

The high school romance is the engine in this story and it purrs. I liked that Ms Hill gave the reader a heads up at the beginning of each chapter that was either in the past or in the present. I always knew who was talking and whether it was the high school version of Ashleigh and Gina or the adult version.

jericho by ann mcmann5. Jericho by Ann McMan

Published by Bedazzled Ink/Audible Studios

This book is a: quirky story with a lot of loveable characters

What it’s about

Librarian Syd Murphy flees the carnage of a failed marriage by accepting an eighteen-month position in Jericho–a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. Her plans to hide out and heal her wounds fall by the wayside as she gets drawn into the daily lives of the quirky locals. She becomes fast friends with Maddie Stevenson, the enigmatic physician who has returned to the backcountry community to take over her late father’s medical practice. Together they learn that life and love can have as many twists and turns as a country road.

Why I love it

Like so many of Ann McMan’s other books, Jericho has tremendous heart, which keeps me coming back to it at least once a year. I especially recommend picking this up in audio, because Christine Williams makes Syd, Maddie and the rest of the town of Jericho come to life in a way that’s just perfect.

all the wrong places by karin kallmaker6. All the Wrong Places by Karin Kallmaker

Published by Bella Books

This book is a: super steamy read

What it’s about

Brandy Monsoon is looking for love. Since there’s never a shortage of casual playmates at the tropical resort where she works as a fitness trainer, most of the time she gets it, too.

If Brandy tires of the perpetually curious but primarily straight women, there’s her best friend Tess for a friendly encounter – safe, with no strings. After all, they’re just buddies.

When an all-lesbian tour group arrives for a week, Brandy is sure she’ll be in paradise on earth. The guests include lesbian celebrity comic Celine Griffin, who has an obvious interest in an after-dinner Brandy. Celine and Brandy do find explosive pleasure together — so why does Brandy feel as if that’s no longer enough for happiness?

Why I love it

Karin Kallmaker wrote one hell of an erotic romance with this book, and I particularly love that it’s about two friends who are casual sex partners that become something more. There’s more than just sex this book though, with lots of family drama, angst, and an ending that made me very happy

Ex Wives of Dracula by Georgette Kaplan7. Ex-Wives of Dracula by Georgette Kaplan

Published by Ylva Publishing

This book is a: hilarious supernatural story

What it’s about

What’s worse than falling in love with a straight girl? Falling in love with a straight girl who drinks blood. And not even in a goth way.

High school senior Mindy Murphy, has been questioning her small town life forever and, more recently, her sexuality. Maybe it has something to do with her new friend, Lucia West. When they were kids they used to be besties, until Lucia grew a head taller and a cup size bigger. Now she’s captain of the cheer team, winner of the Boyfriend Olympics, and voted least likely to remember Mindy at their high school reunion.

In short, possibly the worst person alive for Mindy to crush on. Especially after Lucia’s bitten by a vampire. Now the only way to keep her alive is to get her blood, and the only way to cure her is to slay the vampire that turned her.

Who knows, maybe after they get this vampire business settled, Lucia can explain to Mindy why she kissed her.

Why Brooklyn loves it

The jokes are on point and the relationship between Lucy and Mindy is touching. Its mystery and action are enthralling. I really couldn’t focus on anything but this story for a few days. I ate, slept, and breathed Ex-Wives of Dracula. If you talked to me, I listened, but I was totally thinking about this book.

lucky loser by yolanda wallace8. Lucky Loser by Yolanda Wallace

Published by Bold Strokes Books

This book is a: sports romance

What it’s about

In the high stakes world of women’s tennis, love means nothing. Or at least that’s how Sinjin Smythe sees it. Then she begins to fall for her friend and former doubles partner Laure Fortescue. Having had her heart broken by one player, Sinjin isn’t willing to have it happen again. The talented but oft-injured Brit enters Wimbledon fighting her feelings—and struggling to resurrect her career.

Laure Fortescue has fame, fortune, and a ranking inside the top ten. She has everything she ever wanted. Everything except Sinjin Smythe. As a rule, Laure doesn’t date other players. A rule she would gladly break if it means winning Sinjin’s heart.

Both women reach Wimbledon desperate to claim tennis’s crown jewel—Sinjin because it would be her greatest victory, Laure because it could be her last.

Where does love fit in a game that only one can win?

Why I love it

The character work is strong, the story is compelling, and the pacing is so good that I found myself tearing through the book within a day and a half. I particularly loved how Laure and Sinjin negotiated moving from friendship to a romantic relationship, making sure it was right for them.

Hidden Truths by Jae10. Hidden Truths by Jae

Published by Ylva Publishing

This book is a: historical romance

What it’s about

“Luke” Hamilton has been living as a husband and father for the past seventeen years. No one but her wife, Nora, knows she is not the man she appears to be. They have raised their daughters to become honest and hard-working young women, but even with their loving foundation, Amy and Nattie are hiding their own secrets.

Just as Luke sets out on a dangerous trip to Fort Boise, a newcomer arrives on the ranch—Rika Aaldenberg, who traveled to Oregon as a mail-order bride, hiding that she’s not the woman in the letters.

When hidden truths are revealed, will their lives and their family fall apart or will love keep them together?

Why I love it

Okay, this blurb makes it sound like it’s mostly about Luke and Nora, and they’re actually not the friends who become lovers in this story. The character work is superb in Hidden Truths and Jae does a fabulous job exploring the effects of secrets, regardless of the reason for keeping them.
