Top 10 Rich Girl/Poor Girl Stories

Tara complied a killer Top 10 Rich Girl/Poor Girl lists check it out here:

Want to know the best way to get me to read a lesbian romance? Use one of my favourite themes like stories with celebrities or, in the case of this list, a rich girl falling in love with a poor girl. Does this mean that one woman is actually rich and the other is actually poor? Not necessarily, but having an economic difference between the leads will get my attention faster than almost anything else (*cough*age gap*cough*).

There are rich girl/poor girl stories in all sorts of lesbian fiction subgenres, so I’ve collected my favourites for all of you lovely readers.

Top 10 Rich Girl/Poor Girl

Far From Home by Lorelei Brown1 Far From Home by Lorelie Brown (Riptide Publishing)

My name is Rachel. I’m straight . . . I think. I also have a mountain of student loans and a smart mouth. I wasn’t serious when I told Pari Sadashiv I’d marry her. It was only party banter! Except Pari needs a green card, and she’s willing to give me a breather from drowning in debt.

My off-the-cuff idea might not be so terrible. We get along as friends. She’s really romantically cautious, which I find heartbreaking. She deserves someone to laugh with. She’s kind. And calm. And gorgeous. A couple of years with her actually sounds pretty good. If some of Pari’s kindness and calm rubs off on me, that’d be a bonus, because I’m a mess—anorexia is not a pretty word—and my little ways of keeping control of myself, of the world, aren’t working anymore.

And if I slip up, Pari will see my cracks. Then I’ll crack. Which means I gotta get out, quick, before I fall in love with my wife.

Green card marriage of convenience where one of the characters is in deep debt? Instantly sold. And yet, with the story being told through the lens of Rachel’s anorexia, this ended up being so much more and is one of the best books I’ve read so far in 2016.

Fruit of the Golden Vine by Sophia French3 Fruit of the Golden Vine by Sophia French (Bella Books)

Middle sister Adelina has remained aloof and amused by the string of suitors for her elder sister’s hand—and dowry. But when the swaggering Rafael arrives with an equally eye-catching, bold sister of his own, Adelina’s pulse stirs at last.

Aware from the first that she has caught the lovely Adelina’s interest, Silvana yearns to court her openly, but she and her brother are not what they seem. Moonlit nights in the summer gardens may lead to kisses and whispers of love, but she knows that the lady’s heart will be lost forever if the truth is discovered.

This historic fantasy is chock full of courtly love with a penniless baron (and his sister) seeking the hand and dowry of a wealthy vintner’s daughter (and her sister). This book is gorgeous and I recommend it when you want to read a romance that takes place outside of your typical contemporary setting.

Will these two strong, independent women find a way to deal with their individual baggage? Or will they be overcome by it?

This is one of those books where they’re not necessarily actually rich and poor, but Nora definitely has a lot more money than Kelli. Also, it’s a cops and docs story! What’s not to love about that?

The Organization by Luci di Legge5 The Organization by Lucy di Legge (Supposed Crimes)

Charlotte Parker, a quiet American biochemist, is trying to live out a humdrum life in post-war, near-future London. After an unexpected transfer to a new position at her laboratory, she is drawn into a circle of friendship with her new coworkers and finds herself entangled in an illicit organization where she is unable to tell friend from foe. What’s more – a new and forbidden love interest is pulling her deeper into the fold. Charlotte must choose to continue her under-the-radar lifestyle or risk it all for an organization that may be playing her for a fool.

How did a dystopian near-future book end up on this list? I promise it belongs here. Not only that, but this book is brilliant. It snuck up on me out of nowhere and it’s been rattling around my brain for months and months now.

The Space Between by Michelle L. Teichman6 The Space Between by Michelle L Teichman (Ylva Publishing)

Everything’s great for Harper Isabelle, the most popular girl in grade nine. That is, until she meets Sarah Jamieson. Sarah is a reclusive artist, a loner who wears black makeup and doesn’t have any friends, but for some reason, Harper can’t stop thinking about her.

Sarah isn’t used to people looking her way, especially popular girls like Harper Isabelle. Scared, religious, and unsure of herself, when Sarah begins to realize that her feelings for Harper might go beyond friendship, she is afraid to take the plunge and tell Harper how she feels.

Emotions build between these young women until they both reach their breaking points, and they need to make a choice about coming to terms with who they really are, and what they can and cannot live without.

Can you believe I chose a young adult novel? Me neither, because I almost never pick them up. But I read this one with Brooklyn and we agree that it’s excellent. The rich popular girl falling for the pastor’s kid is well worth your time.

Death Wears Yellow Garters by Rae D. Magdon7 Death Wears Yellow Garters by Rae D Magdon (Desert Palm Press)

Jay Venkatesan’s life was going pretty great. She had Nicole—her perfect new girlfriend—and her anxiety was mostly under control. But when Nicole’s grandfather dies under mysterious circumstances at his 70th birthday party, Jay is thrown into a tailspin. Her eccentric Aunt Mimi is determined to solve the mystery no matter what she thinks about it, and the police are eyeing Nicole as one of their prime suspects. No matter how often Jay insists that real life isn’t like one of her aunt’s crime novels, she finds herself dragged along for the ride as the mystery unravels and the shocking truth comes to light.

just jorie by robin alexander8 Just Jorie by Robin Alexander (Intaglio Publications & Dog Ear Audio)

YOU MUST Listen to this on audio – Sheena

Some believe that special someone is out there just waiting to be found. Jorie Andolini is one of those people and has spent a lot of time envisioning that moment. She bumps into a woman at a grocery store, the woman drops a can of peas, Jorie picks it up, their eyes meet, and two souls connect. But it’s actually a wasted trip to New York, a snowstorm, and a canceled flight home that puts her in the path of Lena Vaughn.

Lena has found fault in every man she’s ever dated. Her dream of finding a husband is dwindling with every year that passes. Despite what her friends say, Lena doesn’t believe she has a fear of commitment, she simply hasn’t found a man she wanted to commit to. It comes as a surprise that in fact it is a woman who stirs those desires. For Lena, it’s not really a matter of sexuality, it’s just Jorie.

Travel the road to happiness with Jorie and Lena. Two crazy old women, meddling friends, and cattitude are just some sights you’ll see along the way.

Sheena and I often don’t agree on books, but this is one where we’re on the same page (see what I did there?). This is more white collar/blue collar than rich girl/poor girl, but it’s an adorable toaster oven romance that had me laughing or smiling all the way through. It even made it to the top of our 10 Best Lesbian Audiobooks list.

Perfect Pairing by Rachel Spangler10 Perfect Pairing by Rachel Spangler (Bywater Books)

Hal Orion is an accomplished chef and food truck owner. She loves her life, her longtime sous chef and best friend, and the food she shares with the residents of her beloved city of Buffalo. Her life is exactly how she wants it: no strings, no commitments, and no roots—just great grilled cheese and a whole lot of freedom on the side.

Quinn Banning is an investment banker, and the dividend she seeks is a resurgence of the once-great city of Buffalo. Putting together her next business venture, she recognizes Hal’s talent and charm as necessary assets for success—her good looks don’t hurt, either. But Hal’s transient ways are in direct opposition to the stability Quinn craves. Relying on their shared love of Buffalo, Quinn makes Hal an offer she can’t refuse—a restaurant under her own name, complete creative control, and secure financial backing. It’s every chef’s dream. But Hal utters the one word Quinn can’t stand to hear, “No.”

Will their physical attraction grow cold as they argue over their ideals, or will they find that the most distinctive ingredients often make for the perfect pairing?

I knew I needed this book in my life as soon as I heard “food truck owner.” What I didn’t know at the time was that there would also be an investment banker. This contemporary romance has delightful banter, delectable food, and a delicious relationship between two unlikely women.

BUT WAIT!

How could I possibly compile a rich girl/poor girl list without a princess book? You’re right! I can’t! For our bonus book, I’m calling out my favourite princess romance of all:

the princess affair by nell starkThe Princess Affair by Nell Stark (Bold Strokes Books)

Rhodes Scholar Kerry Donovan has never had anything handed to her on a silver platter. As she arrives at Oxford to begin her course of study, she is determined to make the most out of this latest opportunity. But when she meets Her Royal Highness Princess Sasha, second in line to the British throne, Kerry’s priorities are eclipsed by an attraction neither of them can ignore. “Sassy Sasha” is a tabloid favorite who appears to delight in scandalizing her people, but beneath her vexed public image, Sasha longs to be truly seen.

Will the tenuous connection she forms with Kerry be broken by the weight of the crown? Or will they find true love despite the forces endeavoring to keep them apart?

I looooove this book. Like, big time, head over heels, love it. Every time I see Kerry and Sasha show up in a new short story, I message the author to squee at her about it. The Princess Affair is sweet and lovely and has just the right amount of angst. Not only do I love it, but fellow reviewer Lise MacTague does too.
