Our list of Top 10 Lesbian Movies is made up of movies that are not just beautifully written with great acting but are technically good too.

Believe it or not, I actually have an honours degree in film editing and while I did not end up working in movies (It’s a long story) I can see the film as a film maker. This means that I notice the sound, editing, lighting and all the small details. This is particularly true when it is a bad film because a good film can draw me in (it took me 10 years to learn to ignore my training and be able to see it as a layman again).

Urg this post was a painful one to write. I love all these movies so much that sorting them into order was really difficult. I want them all to be number one. But, one cannot have a top ten without some sort of order, so I had to sweat over this.

Fried-Green-Tomatoes-Movie1 Fried Green Tomatoes

Two parallel stories. Four memorable characters and a story that is not easy to forget. Jon Avnet did a stunning job turning Fannie Flagg’s bestselling novel into this film.

While certain aspects of the story are different to the book, Avnet stayed true to the overall feel and the way in which Flagg told the story.

You will never think of southern food the same way again.

Tipping-The-Velvet-movie2 Tipping The Velvet

This film (miniseries) is based on the Sarah Waters novel by the same name. In this case, however, I think that they managed to improve on the book.

The miniseries follows the story of Nan, an innocent, who is working in her parent’s Oyster Parlour when she meets Kitty Butler, a woman who pretends to be a man on stage as part of her act.

Nan falls hopelessly in love with Kitty and follows her to London. Little does she know, her life will see ups and downs of epic proportions.

Each chapter covers a new part of Nan’s life. Everything from the lighting to the opulent sets mimic her feeling towards the woman in her life at that point. This miniseries is spectacular.

Boys-On-The-Side-movie-review3 Boys On The Side

While this is not a traditional lesbian film, the lead character is lesbian and a main theme in the film is her love for another woman. An unrequited love. This is a charming movie about a road trip that is less than predictable and ends in a life unforeseen.

This is one of my favourite movies of all time, not just of lesbian films but of all movies.

A bonus to this film is that it has Drew Barrymore, Mary-Louise Parker and Whoopi Goldberg in it, a great cast by any standard.

Amy Bradshaw is the top spy in the D.E.B.S. She feels unsettled even though she is supposed to have the perfect life. She doesn’t know why until she bumps into super villain Lucy Diamond. There is immediate chemistry between the two and they reluctantly part ways when the rest of the DEBS arrive on the scene.

Amy is hailed as the only person to ever see Lucy Diamond and live, making Amy uncomfortable with the praise since she actually liked Diamond.

In the mean time Lucy Diamond cannot think of anything but the beautiful blond she ran into. In a rather clumsy attempt to woo her she kidnaps Amy to take her on a date. Can they find common ground in their opposite worlds?

This is an utterly charming film. It is sweet and funny and makes you wish there were more like it.
