holly sharp the heart thiefEdit: Please note, this book is no longer available

The Heart Thief by Holly Sharp is about a madman who is stealing organs from the people of a small, seaside town. Nobody knows how. Nobody knows why. And nobody knows who will be next.

This brief description from Amazon does not properly set the scene for this tale. It is critical to know more about the setting of this book before reading it. The book contains elements of potions, magic, the undead, and vampires.

While on the hunt for a gruesome thief that is stealing organs from people in her village, Knight Errant Ithaca Caecilia meets up with an alluring, beautiful alchemist. Together they join forces to hunt the monster but little does she know the heart that might be stolen might turn out to be her own.

The Characters

Knight Errant Ithaca Caecilia is the main character. A member of the Ionian Legion in charge of a small town called Novum Endea, she is adventurous, observant, keen, capable, confident and valiant.

Ellory plays a supporting roll. She is in her mid-twenties like Caecilia, with dark hair and eyes to match, an alchemist by trade. To describe her in one word: fearless.

The Writing Style

The book is written from the first person perspective of Knight Errant Ithaca Caecilia. I must admit I had to look up the meaning of quite a few words in this book.

This was the first time I’ve experienced the formatting and writing style of Holly Sharp. It was like turning off a light in a room – my eyes had to adjust to the writing but once they did, I really enjoyed the ride. It really added to the ambiance of the story.

The Pros

I liked the cover art.

The writing was unique.

The plot played out in a smooth manner and the story kept me enthralled.

The Cons

The story was slightly predictable but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it thoroughly.

The piece of the plot I found a little unnecessary is when Caecilia falters ever so slightly at the sight of her ex-boyfriend, although she is indisputably a lesbian (don’t worry she quickly remembers why she doesn’t like him anymore). It’s never explained why she dated him or what happened between them and the author doesn’t dwell on it.

The Conclusion

I encourage anyone who comes across this book to read it. It was fun and the writing was unique. It’s a great book to add to one’s repertoire. The Heart Thief was quite an adventure with the perfect amount of romance.

Excerpt from The Heart Thief by Holly Sharp

Bodies.

Human bodies.

Some still bearing flesh on their skeletons.

Others picked clean by maggots.

Surrounding me on all sides.

At least twenty, perhaps more.

Silence closes in around me.

Except for the distant shouts of those above.

I’ve seen a lot of things in my time.

But this is too much.

Too much death.

Too much horror.

And too much evil.

I need to get out of here.

But I also need to stay.
