The Superheroes Union Dynama by Ruth DiazThe Superheroes Union: Dynama by Ruth Diaz is a novella that asks the important question: what if your evil ex really was evil?

TJ Gutierrez used to be Dynama, but that changed the day she had her ex-husband and archnemesis, Singularity, sent to prison. Now she’s the Hidden Hand, still working for the Superheroes Union, but always blending in with the crowd while using her telekinesis to help other superheroes.

When TJ’s kids come down with a stomach bug, the union sends Annmarie Smith to help her out. TJ gets along easily with Annmarie and each woman finds herself attracted to the other, but it’s when Singularity breaks out of prison that TJ learns just how much she needs someone like Annmarie in her life.

The Characters

Despite The Superheroes Union: Dynama being only 89 pages, Ruth Diaz does a great job fleshing out TJ and Annmarie. Both women are fierce in their own right; TJ hits full on mama bear mode when she hears Singularity is out of prison and Annmarie does whatever it takes to help TJ with her kids and keep her home running. Annmarie grew up with two superheroes as parents and no powers of her own, so she’s all too familiar with what it’s like for children when their parents need to take off at a moment’s notice to save the day. While TJ may be an active superhero, everything she’s done in the seven years since she sent her ex to prison has been to keep her kids safe.

Esteban and Marisol are TJ’s twins. They’re written so that they’re a natural part of the story, seem like real kids, and aren’t annoying or distracting.

The Writing Style

The book is easy to read, with a fun style and good pacing.

The Pros

TJ and Annmarie actually have a discussion about safety before engaging in oral sex. This makes me happy because it’s so rare in lesfic even though women who have sex with women are not automatically immune to STIs (except for… well, read the book and see).

The Cons

This looks like it was meant to be the first book in a series, but there are no sequels.

The Conclusion

If you’ve been looking for a lesbian superhero novel, look no further. I enjoyed The Superheroes Union: Dynama and I recommend it.

Excerpt from The Superheroes Union: Dynama by Ruth Diaz

TJ rested her face in her hands. People like Annmarie—beautiful, educated, competent—always made her own more dubious life choices seem even stupider by comparison. “Some days I hate those superheroes like Titanium, with their arch-nemeses and their superpowered duels above Trade City and their secret hideaways. It’s all so melodramatic. The problem is, some of that crap just seems to happen, no matter how I try to dodge it.” She straightened up again. Annmarie was half-hidden by the pantry door, only her legs and the smooth curve of her behind sticking out. Well, at least that meant TJ didn’t have to worry about hiding her expression when she said the words. “My arch-nemesis is also my ex, and he escaped from prison this afternoon.”

There it was—the stiffening of the line of Annmarie’s leg, followed by the moment where she straightened and stared at TJ. A few seconds later, she crossed the kitchen and opened an upper cupboard, standing on tiptoe to reach the top shelf. She pulled out a bottle of single malt. “Sounds like you could use a drink.”
