Saving-Face-MovieSaving Face is a charming lesbian film set in the Manhattan Chinese community. It is the story of Wil who has to contend with her very traditional, uptight mother who unexpectedly moves in with her. At the same time Wil meets and falls for Vivian, a beautiful dancer.

Wil’s mother has no idea that Wil is a lesbian and keeps trying to set her up with available young men. Wil is so in the closet that it practically takes a crowbar to get her to accept that she has to come out.

Vivian has her own personal demons to fight when she struggles to tell her father that she doesn’t want to take an opportunity to dance in Paris.

Both Vivian and Wil have to learn to accept who they are and stand up to their parents in order to find love.

Add to this a complex and beautiful storyline that involves Wil’s mother and you have a touching story of family, love and the pressures of society.

The Characters and Plot

This is a charming film. It is one of my favourites. The chemistry between the characters is there, the story is both sweet and painful at the right moments and one really feels for the characters.

I also love the comedic moments that are sprinkled throughout the film to give a break to the drama but also create a real sense of the community that they are part of.

The Technical Side

This was a technically well made film. The story flowed, the editing, filming and soundtrack enhanced it all to form a beautiful film well worth a watch.

The Pros

Good chemistry, a lovely, unique little story and a relatively light film.

The Cons

The director is not super prolific. The world needs more of her films.

The Conclusion

Sheenas Favourite Movies and TVIt’s a rare find in the lesbian cinema world and you should absolutely watch this one.
