run to you by georgia beersRun to You by Georgia Beers is a rich girl/poor girl romance and is the second book in her Puppy Love series. It fully stands alone, so you don’t have to read Rescued Heart first, but you might enjoy the books a little more if you read them in order.

Catherine Gardner grew up with no money so she works two jobs to not only pay the bills, but cover essentials like cute new boots. She picks up a few shifts a week waiting tables at an upscale restaurant, but her heart is at Junebug Farms, the respected animal shelter in upstate New York where she works as an accountant.

Emily Breckinridge has long worked for her family, but she’s only just now taking over running their charity foundation. Her brother, Clark, introduces her at Junebug Farms, where everyone figures out that she’s taking his place due to the many sexual harassment complaints against him. Emily finds herself constantly drawn to Catherine, even as the reserved, beautiful woman doesn’t seem to want much to do with her. It quickly becomes apparent, however, that their attraction is mutual, even though Catherine knows she couldn’t find anyone worse to fall for than the shelter’s largest donor.

The Characters

Emily was probably my favourite character. She’s smart and driven, working hard to understand all of the charities that her family’s foundation supports, and isn’t afraid to get in there and volunteer rather than simply cutting a check. She may be wealthy, but she’s never pretentious, and has a kind heart and great sense of humour to boot.

Catherine has more of an arc than Emily and I enjoyed watching her grow. She keeps her personal life to herself, especially at the restaurant. She’s good friends with Jessica, who runs the shelter, but otherwise doesn’t seem to share much about herself with anyone except her mother. She slowly starts to open up to Emily and I love how far she comes by the time they’re having their last conversation in the book.

No matter how much I hoped for it, Clark didn’t die between Rescued Heart and Run to You. He’s still awful and it turns out that learning more about him didn’t make him any more likeable. I was pleased with where he ends up, but I’d still be fine with him never showing up again.

The Writing Style

I feel like I say this every time, but Run to You is by Georgia Beers, so of course the writing is good. It’s so good, in fact, that she makes it look effortless, which is no easy feat. I immediately sank right in and enjoyed the ride.

The Narration

(note: we initially reviewed the kindle version and when the audiobook came out we added to the review)

Abby Craden does a great job narrating this story. Her voice is perfect for Georgia Beers’s words and story, and I loved hearing her bring Emily and Catherine to life. While I enjoyed reading it on my Kindle, I think the audio book is the way to go.

The Pros

The puppies! The main relationship. All of the friends (I do so love how Georgia Beers writes female friendship).

The Cons

I did not like the conflict that split up Emily and Catherine. I saw it coming, hoped it wouldn’t happen, and was angry when it did. That said, I loved how it resolved, particularly how Emily responded to Catherine’s part in it.

The Conclusion

I liked it! It’s not my favourite book by Georgia Beers (it’s going to take a lot to knock A Little Bit of Spice from that spot), but I’m glad I read it.

Excerpt from Run to You by Georgia Beers

“You read romance novels?” Catherine asked, her mouth quirked up in a half-grin. “Like, Harlequins? Danielle Steel? Like that?”

Emily squinted at her. “Oh, sweetheart, you had best not be mocking the romance novel. Them’s fightin’ words.”

Catherine couldn’t help but laugh at Emily’s statement as they turned to head back toward the cabin. “I guess I just never would have pegged you for a romance reader. Sci-fi maybe. Or mystery. Something with a puzzle to figure out. But romance? You already know how they end.”

Emily shrugged. “What’s wrong with that?”

“Don’t you find that boring? Knowing the ending before you even start?”

Emily scrunched up her face in an adorable display of thinking and Catherine, walking next to her, had to bite back a grin. “But, it’s not about the ending. It’s about the ride. Yes, they’re going to end up together. That’s the whole point. But I read the book because I want to take part in the ride. I want to tag along, sit in the back seat and watch, see how they get there. Haven’t you ever heard the saying ‘life is about the journey, not the destination?’ I’m all about the journey. That’s the meat and potatoes of life. It’s what makes it all worth living, that journey.”
