a royal romance by jenny frameA Royal Romance by Jenny Frame is a fun romance. It is the story of Britain’s first openly lesbian queen falling for a commoner. This is a sweet, light romance complete with a romantic proposal and  some lusty sex scenes.

Georgina’s father dies and she becomes queen far sooner than she had anticipated. As the matriarch of the family she needs to be strong and lead them and the country forward. As a result she is barely able to grieve for her father. While working through this she meets Beatrice. Georgina cannot help being intrigued when she meets the anti monarchist as part of a hospice charity tour. She has never been treated with the disdain that Beatrice shows her at first. Georgina makes up her mind to change Beatrice’s perception of the royal family and in so doing lodges herself in Beatrice’s heart.

But, is love really enough to bridge the differences of opinion, never mind the class gap?

Add to this a cousin who feels that he should be on the throne and you have a fun conflict waiting to happen.

The Characters

This is a light read. The characters are not particularly deep or layered and I wouldn’t want them to be for something like this. This novel is pure escapism. It is the delightful fairytale romance of queen meets ordinary woman and they fall in love.

I liked the cut and dry good guys and bad guys and I enjoyed the interplay between the two main women very much. Frame did a good job of winning me over to liking the idea of royals while Georgina won over Beatrice.

The Writing Style

I enjoyed it. The pacing was good, the events kept ticking over and held my attention.

It’s light and I loved that, sometimes it’s fun to not have to delve into the villains deeper motives and to just go – yeah he is awful – jail him already.

The Narration

Lesley Parkin did a fab job narrating this one. When it started it felt a little slow, especially when she was speaking as Georgina but once I got into the swing of it, I enjoyed it tremendously.

The Pros

This book is set a little into the future and so technological advances have been made, especially with regards to prosthetics that allow one to feel as if it is part of you. Naturally this became part of an entertaining sex scene.

I liked the interplay between the women and I loved the kind of behind the scenes glimpse as to what the royal family actually does since they don’t run the country. I don’t know how accurate it is but it was entirely fun escapism.

The Cons

Not a thing.

This was a light, charming listen. It isn’t a book that will change your life and I was really happy about that. Sometimes you just want pure entertainment and this was the best kind.

A Royal Romance is the sort of book that could become a charming Disney family flick (but perhaps without the graphic sex scenes which were also loads of fun).

I loved it and recommend it. It is so cute and so lovely that you will enjoy having it in your collection and for me it will be an audiobook that I listen to again when I want something charming and light.

Excerpt from A Royal Romance by Jenny Frame

George looked over towards her guide. Beatrice was even more beautiful in the flesh. Her delicate features are creamy skin enhanced her elegance and beauty. George had noticed that Beatrice didn’t look too happy, and that was very unusual. She was used to people being genuinely pleased to see her, or even if they didn’t like her personally, they would fawn over her because of her position. This further intrigued her.

“Ma’am? Did you have any questions?”

George was quickly shaken from her thoughts. “No, Danny. I would just like to say to you all, I am grateful for this opportunity to help Timmy’s. Every one of you does such a wonderful job and I admire the dedication you show. I hope we will be able to bring some much needed attention to Timmy’s. Thank you all for your time today.”

“Thank you Ma’am. We have some tea set up in the other room, if you would like to follow me.”

George leaned over to Danny and said quietly, “Could I have a word with Miss Elliot privately before we go through?”

“Of course, Ma’am. Beatrice?” Danny walked over and spoke to his colleague, and George noticed her face fell further into melancholy.

I wonder what I did to deserve that.

Everyone else filed out of the room, and Beatrice walked over to where George was sitting.

George, always courteous, stood. “Do sit down, Miss Elliot.”

I prefer to stand if you don’t mind, Ma’am.” Beatrice’s tone was highly unimpressed.

“Oh…of course.” George remained standing and clasped her hands behind her back. “I just wanted to have a few moments with you, get to know your thinking about what you would like to achieve. We will be spending a lot of time together over the coming months.”

“Don’t I know it,” Be a whispered under her breath.

George let that go and continued. “I noticed during the meeting, and while talking to you, Miss Elliot, that you seem to be less than impressed with your new assignment. Could you tell me what’s bothering you? Perhaps it can be fixed.”

Beatrice sighed.
