The Roundabout by Gerri HillThe Roundabout by Gerri Hill is a delightful enemies to lovers story. Add a great narrator and a sprinkle of small town charm and you get this audiobook.

Megan Phenix owns the local bar and grill in the gay-friendly Eureka Springs. The local lesbians call her hard to get and trying to date her has become somewhat of a local past time. She is desperate to shake these persistent admirers.

Leah Rollins moves to town and opens a store next to the grill. The grill is popular and she finds that some of her allocated parking bays are being used by their clients. Deciding that she needs to put a stop to that she posts a polite note on a car in front of her store. Little does she know what a storm she is about to unleash.

Megan comes back to her car to find a note that tells her not to park in her spot. She is furious and let’s say that the first time she meets Leah is under less than ideal circumstances as she unleashes her temper on the woman.

Things become complicated when Leah is discovered by the single lesbians in town and some rather persistent hopefuls try to snag the fresh meat.

Is it possible that both Leah and Megan can solve their dating woes by pretending to be more than just frenemies? And who knows, maybe beneath that passionate exterior, Leah may discover that Megan has a passionate heart too.

The Characters

Leah is absolutely wonderful. She is the calm to Megan’s storm. And Megan, for all her fury, is also loads of fun.

Some of the side characters and the sideline stories were too delightful and the Facebook photo reveal was hilarious (listen to the book).

The Writing Style

Gerri Hill has a wonderful storytelling style. You get pulled in and find delight in the oddities of each character. Some of the characters in this book could have turned into really yucky characters and yet Hill handled them so well that you could not help but enjoy their escapades.

The Narration

Nicol Zanzarella did a good job of narrating this one. There were one or two times when I couldn’t quite make out who was saying what. A little more heavy on the accents or differentiating the voices would have helped.

Still, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Pros

I like that this wasn’t a typical girl meets girl and they fall hopelessly in love story. It was a girl meets girl and they get to know one another before the sparks fly.

Hill’s character work was impressive and I really felt connected to the women.

I also love that both the characters were a little older and yet full of life.

The Cons

It took a tiny bit too long for the chemistry to happen and when it did it was a little subtle. Having said that, I still loved it so it wasn’t a huge con.

The dialogue is snappy and delightful, the characters are brilliant and play off one another well. The small town is perfect and makes me want to move there.

You should absolutely get this audiobook. It’s a delightful listen. I am so happy I have it in my collection because it will be one that I listen to again and again.

Excerpt from The Roundabout by Gerri Hill

“What the hell?”

She got out and yanked the note off, her eyebrows drawing together as she read it again.

I believe this parking pace is designated for my shop, not he Phenix Grill. Please kindly park somewhere else.

“What the hell?”

Turning, she found the door to the bookstore standing open. Without thinking, she marketed inside, holding the note up in the air.

“Who do you think you are?” she demanded.

The woman turned, surprise showing on her face. Then a smile appeared and she held her hand out in greeting.

“I think I’m Leah Rollins,” she said.

Megan stared at her hand, then ignored both it and the easy smile the woman sported. “And this?” she asked, waving the note at her.

“Oh. Well, that’s a note. I though it was obvious.”

Her tone indicated that it was a stupid question, and Megan found herself scowling.

“Yeah,” the woman continued. “I left it for the person who’s been parking in front of my store in that gas-guzzling SUV. There was even a ‘reserved’ sign there too.” She scratched the back of her neck. “Was that you?”

“I’m Megan Phenix,” she said through clenched teeth. “I own the grill next door.”

“Oh…Phenix Grill. Huh.” The woman smiled again. “I though you’d just misspelled Phoenix.”

“Ha ha,” Megan said humorlessly. “And what do you mean, gas-guzzling? My SUV is midsized. It’s quite conservative.”

“Conservative? No. A hybrid would be conservative.”

“Oh, my God. Are you one of those?” She shook her head. “Of course you are. You’re from California.”
