Right Here, Right Now by Georgia Beers is a delightful play on the girl-next-door theme, with the right amount of angst to keep things interesting.

Lacey Chamberlain is an accountant and financial advisor. With tax season starting, her quiet, orderly ways are her only hope of keeping things under control. When a small, but lively marketing firm takes over the office space next to hers, life gets a lot more interesting (and frustrating) for Lacey.

As much as she can’t stand the loud music, occasional kickball in the hall, and constant bribing of her secretary with food, Lacey can’t help but light up when she sees Alicia Wright, owner of Just Wright Marketing & Graphic Design. Alicia is warm, dynamic, gorgeous, and set on drawing Lacey out of her routine. Their attraction is undeniable, but can two people so different really have a happily ever after?

The Characters

Lacey and Alicia are officially my new favourite couple by Georgia Beers. They’re a perfect opposites-attract pairing, with Alicia’s “live in the moment” way of life in total contrast to Lacey’s predictable, rule-following lifestyle. Because Right Here, Right Now is told in the first person from Lacey’s perspective, we learn things when she does and we experience her character growth right alongside her.

Alicia is the perfect person to get Lacey out of her comfort zone, clearly knowing when to pull or when to push, while still respecting Lacey’s limits. Alicia has some growing of her own to do, and I can’t really say anything else without spoilers, except to note that I was very happy with how things ended up for her.

Between the other employees at Just Wright, plus Lacey’s family, her best friend, and her secretary, Mary, there’s a strong cast of side characters that round out the story nicely. They help us see Lacey and Alicia for exactly who they are and they support them at all the right times. Also notable is Leo, Lacey’s dog, who’s clearly the cutest terrier going.

The Writing Style

With Right Here, Right Now, it feels like Georgia Beers has stepped up her writing game again. I think she made a bold choice to tell the story in the first person, and it paid off beautifully because reading this book was such a rich, satisfying experience. I loved getting to see everything through Lacey’s eyes and it allowed for some interesting narrative choices that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise (again, I can’t say more because of spoilers, but if you’ve already read it, you probably know what I’m talking about).

Having Alicia move into the office next to Lacey’s was a fun interpretation of the girl next door, even as she embodies the character type at first glance. Adding the opposites attract theme to it worked especially well, because we learn that they’re opposites in more ways than we’d first thought.

The Narration

In hanging out in lesfic groups on Facebook, I’ve noticed that people tend to either love or hate Paige McKinney as a narrator. Personally, I enjoy her performances, and this book was no exception. She did a good job of inhabiting Lacey and bringing her world to life. If you’re not a fan of Paige McKinney, however, you’ll want to stick with the ebook because the story is too excellent to be missed.

The Pros

Everything about Right Here, Right Now worked for me. I adored the characters, the writing is beautiful, the romance is delicious, the sex possibly the hottest she’s ever written, and who doesn’t love a cute little dog?

The Cons

I can’t talk about the stuff that I’m especially excited about because of spoilers!

If you love excellent lesbian romances, you really must read Right Here, Right Now. It’s one of my favourite romances of 2017 and I’ll be reading this one again and again.

Excerpt from Right Here, Right Now by Georgia Beers

Alicia returned with two whiskeys, neat, and set one in front of me, then sat in the chair to my left. She held up her glass until I picked up my own. “To the end of your cold.”

“I’ll drink to that.”

We clinked glasses and I sipped. I hate whiskey. Did I mention that? It’s awful stuff, like lighter fluid burning its way down my throat. It doesn’t really taste any better than NyQuil, to be honest. But I know it’s good for what ails you, as my grandma would say. And also, the fact that it was suggested by and then purchased by Alicia made it somehow more palatable. Not much, but a little.

Alicia made a face as she swallowed her drink, and I grinned at her.

“Why are we drinking whiskey?” I asked, raising my voice over the girl singing “I Will Survive” so Alicia could hear me.

“Because you’re sick and this is supposed to help.” She held up her glass.

“You’re not sick. Why are you drinking it?”

“I like it.”

I laughed. “No, you don’t.”

“No, I don’t. But I didn’t want you to drink it alone.” Her smile was soft.

“That might be the sweetest thing anybody’s ever said to me.”

Alicia’s eyebrows went up. “You need to get out more, my friend.” She bumped me with a shoulder and suddenly, I didn’t feel so sick.

Wait. No, that’s not true. I still felt sick. But I also felt…happy being out with these people. Happy being out with Alicia. I’d stepped out of my comfort zone of routine and the world hadn’t crumbled. On the contrary, I found myself actually having fun.
