Meet Me in the Middle by Yvonne HeidtMeet Me in the Middle by Yvonne Heidt is a delightful romantic read, with a slight paranormal twist.

Aislin O’Shea is many things; a busy veterinarian, one of five O’Shea sisters, and perhaps most pertinent, still haunted by the death of her wife.

Unbeknownst to her, literally. Zane Whitman has also known loss in her life; her mother died much too young, and her father fills his time by marrying younger and younger women. Now the afterlife is conspiring against Aislin and Zane, or is that for them?

Add the spirit of a dead wife to the spirit of a dead mother, and bind them together with the spirit of an O’Shea Gran, and Happily Ever After never had a chance of escaping.

But Aislin and Zane are going to fight fate every step of the way, because despite any attraction either may feel, both know that the other is most definitely not their type.

The result is some funny missteps, including several trips to the floor, a couple of dog tranquilizers that may have been slightly mis-prescribed, and some very exasperated ghosts. But nudge as they might, ghosts can’t get the still-living people to make the choices that will bring happiness. All they can do is set things up and hope nature takes its course. And the result is a pure joy to read.

The Characters

Aislin O’Shea is a gentle soul, but with four other sisters, you better believe she’s no pushover. So cross her at your peril. She’s the shy sister, quiet, with a touch of social anxiety, and still grieving. Her love for her wife, Shannon, still endures, and she never expects to find that kind of loving relationship again. She’s still haunted by the events of the night three and a half years ago when her wife died, but she’s trying to move on with her life.

Zane Whitman seems to be getting what she wants out of life, and right now, that’s working in her father’s law firm while dating quite a few women; models, actresses, and fellow blue bloods. At least she’s stayed away from the mistakes her father and brother have made – marrying often and badly. She’s decided never to fall in love, and never to waste her time with what will undoubtedly be yet another Whitman failed relationship.

The Writing Style

This book seems to move along quickly. The pacing of events is excellent and the language is smooth and easy to read. Definitely kept me turning pages.

The Pros

I loved the humor in this book. The scenes really made me laugh out loud. Also, the addition of the paranormal aspect brought a sweet touch to the story.

The Cons

Some people may not like the paranormal addition, thinking it may seem a little cutesy. I personally liked it. It felt like a hopeful glance at what might happen after our loved ones die, and what they might do to nudge us in the right direction.

The Conclusion

Definitely a good buy. The humor in the book entertained but didn’t overwhelm the romance. Heidt also allowed a good resolution to the different ways people grieve that felt natural and well developed. This would definitely be a recommendation from me.

Excerpt from Meet Me in the Middle by Yvonne Heidt

“What is that look you’re giving me?”

“Ace, it’s my face. It always has an expression on it.” Brianna smiled.

Aislin laughed. “Please just tell me what’s on your mind.”

“Sure, and if you didn’t see or feel it, little sister, you ought to be ashamed of your Irish. Or, lack thereof.”

Aislin smiled. “You sounded just like Granny with your brogue all turned up.”

“Aye. And what fun would it be if she didn’t pop through once in a while?”

“Right?” Aislin laughed. “Now spill.”

“Okay, if you’re going to play stupid. I saw how Zane Whitman was looking at you. I also saw you take more than a second look at her with an expression of your own.”

“I did not.” Aislin’s cheeks warmed. “She is so not my type, she’s in another stratoshpere.”

Brianna looked genuinely puzzled. “Tall, platinum-haired, green-eyed, and beautiful is not your type?”

“You know what I mean.”

“Honestly, Ace? I’m sure I don’t.”

“People like her go out with models and socialites named Buffy and Prudence, blue-blooded, pretentious ice princesses dressed so sharp they cut you just looking at them, all while looking down their noses at you.”

“You are pretty much shorter than everyone, Ace.”

“Okay, I’ll give you that one.” The pull she’d felt in her belly when she initially saw Zane returned with a buzz, but she would never confess it to her sister. She didn’t want to admit it to herself.
