Lethal Affairs by Kim Baldwin and Xenia AlexiouLethal Affairs by Kim Baldwin and Xenia Alexiou is the first book in the Elite Operatives series.

Domino is one of the best operatives in the Elite Operatives Organization (EOO). She is smart, gorgeous and doesn’t hesitate when she needs to kill someone. But anyone connected to this case suddenly dies and she starts to wonder if her career is worth all this. Caught between the desire to find out the truth and the danger to her life, Hayley needs to make some tough decisions.

Will Hayley figure out who Domino really is in time and will Domino be able to execute the order to kill this reporter if she finds out too much? What neither woman counts on is the very real feelings they develop.

The Writing Style

This was a fantastic action romance. It’s right up there with Sharpshooter for me as a must-read if you are looking for slick, well designed action that has a great plot with a sweet side romance.

The Characters

The cast was tons of fun. I enjoyed everyone, from the founders of the EOO, right through to Domino and Hayley. The two main characters had entertaining character moments and the founders made me curious about their stories. What’s not to love about a school that trains a team of elite operatives?

The romance was done well with captivating chemistry between the leading ladies. Also, Domino is totally kick ass with fantastic action scenes.

The Narration

Paige McKinney was a good narrator. The story was well told and she kept me entertained and wanting to listen. This was a good start to the series and I hope they bring the rest out on audiobook.

The Pros

This audiobook ticked all of my must-have-in-an-action boxes – there were guns, seemingly impossible odds and a big choice to be made by Domino. The action sequences were well described, the romance was sizzling and the two leads were feisty and hot.

The Cons

I don’t like the cover of the book and the audiobook is even worse – it looks like they just squished the already not great cover. This book deserves better.

If you enjoy non-stop action, great writing and a sexy storyline then this is a must-listen audiobook. I loved it.

In fact, the more I listen to Baldwin’s books the more I love her writing style. She pulls you into the story, develops fantastic female leads and tells a story that you can’t necessarily see coming. This one is satisfying and will definitely be a go-to action for me.

Great work by Baldwin and Alexiou.

Excerpt from Lethal Affairs by Kim Baldwin and Xenia Alexiou

Amid the shots, Domino focused on the little girl trying to free herself from her dead mother’s weight. She would walk right into the middle of this. Assess and resolve. Only two of them remained now, fighting God knew how many, and she didn’t have a gun. One of Hasan’s guys was firing nonstop at the other EOO operative, and the little girl wandered toward the line of fire.

Domino shook herself into action and retrieved the knife strapped to her calf. In a crouch, she silently hurried toward the shooter who’d killed the other operative, still firing from behind a tree. The adrenaline pouring through her filled her ears and drowned out even the sound of the guns. Her heart jackhammered so loud she wondered whether it might give her away.

The knife in her right hand would be fast and quiet. Behind the shooter now, Domino grabbed his hair, pulled his head back, and cut cleanly through the carotid. He dropped like a stone. Without hesitation, she sheathed her knife and hid his MP5 submachine gun under her robe, then started toward the café though the flying bullets and panicked civilians.

She still had an operative on his own who must be running out of ammo. They had yet to accomplish the mission, and she had to prove herself. Don’t hesitate. You can do this. Remember your training.

Though concentrating on the café window, she saw the little girl on her knees, back beside her dead mother, crying while bullets flew over hear head. The sight propelled her through the gunfire and past the Turkish police, who were busily trying to arrest every local Turk and Arab. She had to act, now. Don’t overthink. Overthinking makes you hesitate. You hesitate, you go home in a box.

Domino crept to the back of the café, intending to work around to the front as quietly as possible. But there she spotted the toilet window. She jumped with the submachine gun slung over one shoulder, hung on to the window frame, and pulled herself up. Once in the men’s room, she put her hand on the door handle.

Failure is not an option. She took a deep breath and shut out everything in her head, until she could no longer hear the shooting in the next room or the cries of the little girl or the shouting of the people.

Swinging the MP5 up into position, she pushed the door open.
