Fearless by Shira GlassmanFearless by Shira Glassman is a very sweet short story about a band mom falling for the school’s orchestra director. Lana Novak is a newly out lesbian, finally split from her gay husband and ready to live the life she always wanted. When she goes with her daughter on a band trip, Lana finds herself crushing on Melanie, the cute butch who works with the kids in the orchestra. A snowstorm leaves everyone stranded at the hotel, making it the perfect time for Mel to reintroduce Lana to her old love—the violin—while they kindle something new.

The Characters

Fearless might be a short story, but it does a good job of letting us know who each of the characters are, especially Mel, Lana, and Lana’s daughter Robin. They’re likeable, relatable, and Lana and Mel are very sweet together.

The Writing Style

This is a very cute story that you can enjoy in one sitting. No angst, all adorbs, making it a nice change of pace if you’ve been reading something really heavy and dramatic.

The Pros

It has everything I could possibly want in a short story.

The Cons

Nothing.

The Conclusion

If you’re looking for a story to kill an hour or so, I recommend Fearless. It’s so sweet and really reasonably priced.

Excerpt from Fearless by Shira Glassman

“I hope they get the roads cleared soon,”  Mel commented, “before the hotel starts running out of more vital ingredients.”

“Chocolate could be a vital ingredient,”Lana quipped. “I’ve had a long day.”

After the checks were paid, and everyone made quick detours to the ladies’ room, the students returned to their respective ballrooms for the evening rehearsal. Lana curled up on the same seat as before. She tried to stay focused, but the music was too soothing this time and she’d done too much this morning starting too early. She slipped into a sleep that almost felt drugged, with the warm sounds of the string section washing all around her like a bubble bath.

Lana didn’t know how long she’d slept, roused by the orchestra reaching a less quiet part of the piece. She noticed something in the seat beside her—it was a chocolate bar, on top of a piece of hotel stationery marked “—M.”
