evonnia-and-the-maiden-by-keira-michelle-telfordEvonnia And The Maiden by Keira Michelle Telford is a short erotic tale of a virginal maiden and a water nymph.

Evonnia is in her late teens and really unhappy about still being a virgin. She doesn’t find any of the boys attractive and the girls won’t pay her the slightest bit of attention. One day she is taking a walk when she discovers a woman lying naked and bound next to a river.

This is the story of what happens when Evonnia frees the woman.

Telford’s use of language is, as always, superb. She manages to set a mood that runs throughout the book. As with her other short story, Hoar and Rime, there is a darkness to the story that is missing in her full length works. It is as if she gets the need to write something gloomy and writes a novella. I wouldn’t mind seeing her try her hand at a horror or thriller, I think it may be quite the read.

This story is unusual for her because there isn’t really a graphic sex scene. Don’t get me wrong, the book is graphic, but not in the usual way. With her other works that she labels as erotic there is a lot of teasing followed by satisfying sex scenes. This one missed both the teasing and the satisfaction. To be fair, it is only 20 pages long or so.

The ending felt a little incomplete and you need to read The Myth at the end to really understand the story.

Having said that, if you take this story as if it were a short piece of mythology then it feels just right. It feels like a fairy tale, a dream (or nightmare).

It is an absolutely unique read and well worth the very small price tag.

Excerpt from Evonnia And The Maiden by Keira Michelle Telford

Disoriented and rigid with panic, the maiden peered up at her savior, confusion evident in her pale blue eyes. Evonnia expected her to draw back then, recoiling like a frightened animal, alarmed by her state of undress, but once the shock of awakening in a stranger’s arms melted away, the tension in her body dissipated.

“Hold me,” she whispered, and sank against Evonnia’s chest. “Please.”
