depths-of-blue-by-lisa-mactagueDepths Of Blue by Lise MacTague is about Jak and Torrin. Torrin is a smuggler who is always looking for the next big score. When she hears about a civil war, on a relatively isolated planet, she can’t help but see the money she can make.

Jak is one of the best snipers in the male-only army. Hiding the fact that she is a woman is not always easy but it is necessary. Little does she know that her mission to kill an off world smuggler will lead to big decisions and an unexpected attraction.

This novel is about the life and death adventure of the two women who need to fight their way through enemy territory, battle fatigue and the local wildlife.

And that is only the first half of the novel.

The Writing Style

I often find sci-fi novels to be over written with too much explanation of the world, the history, the technology and even the wildlife. Lise MacTague has a really refreshing take on this genre. Her world is well-created and different enough to make it interesting. Before you know it, you are transported to a blue planet with a raging civil war.

The story moves at a good pace, lingering only on important moments. The dialogue is well done and believable. The characters are gorgeously written, full of insecurities and real.

I especially love that Torrin feels really conflicted about being attracted to Jak because ‘he is a man’. That is such a cute touch.

The Pros

This is absolutely a must-read novel. It has everything you could want in a novel including: a decent length, fantastic writing, a good pace, an unexpected turn or two, great characters and a romance.

The Cons

My biggest con is that I didn’t find it sooner. Lise MacTague is right on top of my new authors you must-read list.

Another minor con for me is the cover. It is a nice looking cover but it doesn’t actually do the story justice and it doesn’t look like either of the characters.

This novel is absolutely brilliant. I am ecstatic to find out that she has already written book two in the series and that she is busy with another novel. A writer with her talent must keep writing.

So go get it. Go get it right now. Haven’t got it yet? Why not?

Excerpt from Depths of Blue by Lise MacTague

Jak felt like she’d been kicked in the gut. The offworld smuggler was female and she was gorgeous. From the twist of her lips she also had no interest in Hutchinson’s advances. What the hell was she supposed to do now? She didn’t want to kill the woman. She’d never killed a woman before. While she has no problems killing Orthodoxans, this was no Orthodoxan. They deserved what they got and she was more than happy to give them a bullet between the eyes. But a woman? Her finger hovered over the trigger, then withdrew for a moment before resting on it again. Her orders were clear: kill the offworld smuggler. But no one had told her she was female. Cold sweat broke out on her forehead as she wrestled with her orders, caught squarely on the horns of her dilemma.

There was something about her, a look of disdain for her current company. Jak seized on that detail. Maybe she could turn this around.
